MARTINE PLOUVIERConservateur en chef honoraire du patrimoine 8 Les sources littéraires parlent de ces animaux de manière à en célébrer l'originalité, la rareté, la bizarrerie ; elles en exagèrent le caractère exotique justement pour des raisons de propagande politique, pour montrer l'ampleur des terres conquises. L'animal est un symbole de l'excellence du règne et de la bienveillance divine sur le roi, sans laquelle il n'aurait pas pu gagner des contrées si lointaines. Dans l'« obélisque noir », une oeuvre en calcaire noir (fig. 1), haute de 198 cm et large de 45 cm 18 , datant du règne de Salmanazar III (seconde moitié du IX e siècle, vers 825 av. J.-C.), plusieurs espèces peuvent ainsi être reconnues parmi les cinq panneaux superposés qui composent chacune des quatre faces (la lecture ne se fait pas en sens vertical, par face, mais en sens horizontal, par rangées) : chameaux, éléphants, rhinocéros, singes. Certes, leur représentation est liée à la fascination pour des animaux étranges et étrangers, mais elle se plie aussi aux nécessités de la proclamation politique de la justesse des actions du roi assyrien : les animaux offerts à Salmanazar III symbolisent le pays soumis par le roi et deviennent donc autre chose que de simples animaux, ils symbolisent la soumission au roi d'Assyrie, une soumission qui serait juste, car voulue par les dieux. Le texte de 190 lignes qui accompagne la représentation fournit une liste des animaux bizarres venus d'Égypte : « Un dromadaire dont le dos est double (chameau), un buffle, un rhinocéros, une antilope, des éléphants, des cercopithèques, des babouins noirs. 19 » 9
