Bu çalışmanın amacı yazılı anlatımla ilgili yüksek lisans tezlerinde kullanılan değişkenleri çeşitli yönlerden değerlendirmektir. Çalışmada araştırılması hedeflenen olgu veya olgular hakkında bilgi içeren yazılı materyallerin analiz edilmesini sağlayan nitel araştırma yöntem ve tekniklerinden doküman incelemesi kullanılmıştır. Çalışmanın veri setini Türkçe Eğitimi alanında yazma becerisiyle ilgili olarak gerçekleştirilen yüksek lisans tezleri oluşturmaktadır. Veri seti, Yükseköğretim Kurulu Başkanlığı'nın tez veri tabanından "yazma, yazılı anlatım, yazma becerisi, yazılı anlatım becerisi" anahtar kelimeleri kullanılarak yapılan tarama sonucunda elde edilmiştir. Bu şekilde 1989 ile 2019 yılları arasında toplam 159 yüksek lisans tezi tespit edilmiştir. Bu tezler arşivlenerek öncelikle çalışmanın temel bakış açısını oluşturan "değişken" kavramı doğrultusunda incelenmiş ve değişken kullanılan yüksek lisans tezleri, değişken kullanılmayan yüksek lisans tezleri olmak üzere iki başlık altında sınıflandırılmıştır. Bu işlem sonucunda çalışmanın veri seti değişken kullanılan 70 yüksek lisans tezinden oluşmuştur. Veri setinde bulunan yüksek lisans tezleri "çalışmada kullanılan değişkenler, değişkenlere çalışmanın hangi başlıklarında yer verildiği (problem durumu, yöntem, bulgular, sonuçlar, öneriler vb.), değişkenlerin gerekçeleri" gibi ölçütler doğrultusunda analiz edilmiştir. Çalışmanın sonucunda tezlerin problem durumu, problem cümlesi ve alt problemler, araştırmanın amacı ve önemi başlıklarında değişkenlere çok az yer verildiği, çalışmalarda kullanılan değişkenlerin niçin seçildiklerine ilişkin gerekçelerin açık bir şekilde ifade edilmediği, aynı değişkenlerle ilgili olarak farklı bulgulara ulaşıldığı, değişkenlerle ilgili çok az öneride bulunulduğu tespit edilmiştir.
