A randomly selected group of 720 adolescents responded to the Mooney Problem Check List. The relationship between the problems reported for each of the 11 problem areas of the MPCL (dependent variables) and the 14 independent variables was analyzed statistically by employing the least‐squares analysis of variance technique. This analysis yielded significant differences for 7 of the 14 independent variables. Possible implications of the findings of this study for educational planning are discussed, and recommendations made for a more comprehensive study of the problems of adolescents at the local level.

Much has been written in recent years with regard to the nature of guidance in the elementary school. Articles, mostly theoretical in nature, have appeared in professional journals with increasing frequency in an attempt to resolve and clarify the role of the elementary counselor, the selection and education of prospective counselors, and the differences, if any, between evolving elementary guidance programs and their more established counterparts at the secondary school level.Recent texts including those by Carry (1963) and Peters, Shertzer, and Van Hoose ( 1965) have updated and expanded the information presented in some of the earlier works of Barr (1958), Detjen and Detjen (1952), and Kowitz and Kowitz (1959). Such efforts as these, however, still have not clarified the role of the elementary guidance worker, and the field still seems to be moving forward without concrete guidelines. With such uncertainty still existing as to the nature of elementary school guidance, a problem of considerable magnitude seems to be present for those concerned with counselor education in the nation's colleges and universities. During the 1965-66 school year, three major universities-Illinois, Missouri, and Arizona State-were conducting year-long institutes designed to prepare guidance workers for the elementary schools. An additional seven institutes were in operation during the 1966-67 school year, with those at Arizona State and Illinois in their second year of operation. Although such expanded operations are perhaps encouraging, the elementary guidance worker who completes a program at one of these institutions may find that his preparation differs in varying degrees from his fellow student who has studied elsewhere.Evidence of the diversified thinking with regard to the preparation of elementary guidance workers can be seen in the results of some studies done in the late 1950's and early 1960's. MacMinn and Ross (19S9) in their study of 178 institutions that offered preparation programs in elementary guidance found many variations from school to school, and Hill and Nitzschke (1961) in a similar study involving 154 universities offer-James J.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
