This paper presents performance Characteristics of the C M -5 data network with respect t o bandwidth and latency. W e present the maximum effective network bandwidth as a function of (1) message sire, (2) varying data path through different levels of the network hierarchy, and (3) s y s t e m load. W e also present latency as a function of message size and network hierarchy. In the second pari of our evaluation, we present the maximum effective network bandwidth as a function of data p o w pattern (2-d and 3-d mesh, stencils, ring, tree, and 'hypercube) using several variant embedding schemes. Measurements were obtained using C M M D V 1.3. I , Thinking Machine Corporation's messagepassing library, and C M N F V 1.1, a f a s t messagepassing library developed by the Minnesota Supercom-
puter C e n t e r (MSC) for the A r m y High PerformanceResearch C e n t e r ( A H P C R C ) . Using C M N F we were able to observe measurements which were very close t o actual hardware capabilities.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
