Que signifie «interpréter» un texte littéraire pour des enseignantes du secondaire? Comment invitent-elles leurs élèves à interpréter, dès le début du secondaire? Cet article, qui s’inscrit en didactique de la littérature, présente une étude multicas réalisée à partir d’entretiens semi-dirigés menés avec neuf enseignantes de français du 1er cycle du secondaire québécois. Les résultats décrivent les consonances et dissonances dans leurs conceptions de l’interprétation de textes littéraires et dans l’enseignement de la lecture littéraire. Entre les limites des prescriptions ministérielles et la disciplination des élèves qui apprennent à répondre à des questionnaires de lecture, nos résultats ouvrent la voie sur l’importance d’articuler les opérations de lecture (compréhension, interprétation, réaction, appréciation) et proposent une réflexion sur la pertinence de recourir à des dispositifs didactiques variés pour faire jaillir une diversité interprétative en classe.
