AbstractThis article presents the results of the project "Analysis of the right to participation of children and adolescents: A case study of the formal spaces of participation in three Educational Institutions in Cartagena", which sought to describe, analyze and assess the knowledge and perception that children and adolescents have about their rights, especially the right to participation at school as a space for the strengthening of democratic values and citizenship. For this purpose, a documentary review of the guidelines in Colombia that regulate spaces for school participation was made, and based on quantitative and qualitative techniques for data collection, the knowledge and perception of the academic community about participation and existing spaces for its exercise at school was investigated. It was found that a large part of the student community has little interest in the democratic processes that take place in their institution as a result of not having a clear conception of their rights, which means that these rights are not being recognized or demanded, due to ignorance of the participation as a right and finally a product of distrust in the democratic processes that are implemented at school.
