fait don de ses yeux à la science par l'intermédiaire de la Banque française des yeux, persuadé de l'ouverture d'un « âge nouveau de l'histoire humaine où ces organes tiendront un rôle de premier plan » 1. Cet acte symbolique, sans conséquences concrètes, se charge toutefois d'un sens solennel chez Raymond Pichard qui prend soudainement conscience de la puissance de la « civilisation de l'image ». Dès lors, il se lance dans la critique cinématographique avant d'enregistrer ses premières messes radiodiffusées puis télévisées. Des brouillons, ébauches d'articles non terminés, témoignent déjà de son intérêt pour Citizen Kane (Orson Welles, 1941) à la sortie de ce film en France en juillet 1946. Son discours sur le cinéma détonne d'emblée avec celui du monde catholique français d'alors. Il inaugure une nouvelle forme d'expression religieuse sur l'objet filmique faisant le lien entre cinéma et théologie, tandis que la Centrale catholique du cinéma, organe officiel de l'Action catholique, refuse toute exégèse du média. Depuis l'entre-deux-guerres, la priorité de l'Action catholique du cinéma est la reconquête des masses 2. À son tour, Raymond Pichard, en prônant l'actualisation culturelle de l'Église, oeuvre pour la transmission du Message aux incroyants. Pour mieux cerner l'étonnante posture du dominicain, cet article voudrait retracer son parcours par rapport au cinéma. Mais Raymond Pichard n'a pas un point de vue strictement cinématographique sur le film : c'est son engagement à la radio et à la télévision qui le pousse à le spécifier au regard de ses autres activités. Cette étude, circonscrite aux années 1947 et 1955, a voulu respecter les étapes de ces croisements médiatiques. D'abord, le maniement pluriel des techniques permet une pratique indépendante, mais intégrée, du cinéma aux autres médias. Ensuite, le recours théorique comme pratique à la télévision rend possible le passage aisé de Pichard de la critique vers la production de films. Or, ces expériences médiatiques doivent être appréhendées à l'aune des réactions et réceptions du milieu confessionnel dans lequel le dominicain évolue, afin de saisir la portée du bouleversement théorique qu'il induit. Il nous faut comprendre ce qui rend possible l'émergence d'un discours hors des normes du catholicisme français et comment la posture de Pichard parvient ou non à être admise. Nous tâcherons ainsi de montrer comment ses propositions, pourtant inaudibles, participent à la formation d'une cinéphilie catholique alternative à laquelle il reste, paradoxalement, étranger.
