The purpose of the present study was to explore the suicidal ideation of community-dwelling elderly and the factors associated with their intention to commit suicide. Using a multilevel stratified sampling strategy, 1000 elderly subjects were recruited (aged 65-74 years old) in Taiwan during the year 2001. The degree of depression and its correlates were assessed. Suicidal ideation was measured by asking respondents if they had had any suicidal thoughts in the previous week. In all, 16.7% of respondents reported suicidal ideation within the past week; its occurrence was related to sex, religious belief, employment status, marital status, average family monthly income, physical health status, depressive symptoms, and community activity participation. Further multivariate logistic regression revealed that, aside from depressive symptoms and a lower level of education, no community participation in the past 6 months was significantly associated with the appearance of suicidal ideation. The prevalence of suicidal ideation among the elderly in Taiwan is higher than in Western countries. Participation in social activities is negatively associated with elderly suicidal ideation. The dimension of social participation deserves further exploration and should be considered in community mental health promotion interventions for elderly people.
This study examined how maturation and the size of deviance affect the development of mismatch responses to Mandarin lexical tones by a multi-deviant oddball paradigm with both large deviant T1/T3 and small deviant T2/T3 pairs in newborns and 6-month-olds. The T1/T3 pair elicited a positive mismatch response (P-MMR) at birth but an adult-like mismatch negativity (MMN) at 6 months of age. For the T2/T3 pair, no significant MMR was seen in newborns, whereas a P-MMR was found when infants are 6 months old. Results suggest that the developmental trajectories of MMRs are dependent on the neural maturation and the discriminability of tonal changes.
Betel nut chewing plays a relevant role in the development of esophageal SCC but adds to the carcinogenetic effect of smoking and alcohol drinking. Direct mucosal contact of betel juice may contribute to its carcinogenesis.
Nurse managers could design interventions to reduce and prevent nurses from being influenced by burnout and secondary traumatic stress. Educating nurses to build effective social networks with relatives or friends and to seek support when experiencing secondary traumatic stress may also be needed.
Abstract. We investigated gene expressions involved in the glycolytic pathways in colorectal cancer. The study was designed to use gene ontology and its relevant bioinformatics tools to analyze the microarray data obtained from CRC tissues and their corresponding normal tissues, in order to explore the correlation between the glycolytic metabolic pathway and possible pathogenesis of this disease. The overexpression of glycolysis-related genes was observed in over 76% of CRC tissues. In addition, we stimulated the SW480 and SW620 CRC cell lines with 15 mM D-(+)-glucose and 10 mM 2-deoxy-D-glucose respectively. The results indicate that the proliferation response of both the SW480 and SW620 cell lines increased remarkably with a time-dependent effect by D-(+)-glucose administration. In contrast, the proliferation response of both the SW480 and SW620 cell lines was significantly inhibited by 2-DG administration. Likewise, further analyses of the expression of related genes triggered by the D-(+)-glucose in vivo show that the activation process of these eight genes -GLUT1, HK1, GPI, GAPD, PGK1, PGK2, ENO2, PKM2 -prominently increased with a timedependent effect. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that the glycolytic pathway and glycolysis-related genes may play an important role in the tumorigenesis of CRC, but their molecular mechanisms need further investigation to verify this.
