Movie has significant function not only as an entertainment but more importantly it also functions to document the historical events, to negotiate or even challenge the existing norms in the society. This paper discusses how Hollywood movies represent the discourse of Muslim terrorist. The movies share similar theme of Muslim terrorism; they are "The Siege" (1998) and "Syriana"( 2005). The question presented here is how the movies represent the discourse of Muslim terrorism. This question critically addresses the issue of different faces of "Muslim terrorist" represented in the Hollywood films and the ideas or ideology underlied. The films are analysed through the lenses of critical discourse analysis (CDA). Fairclough"s CDA discover the discourse through three levels of analysis, micro, meso and macro analysis. It aims to unravel how the Muslim terrorist is constructed by a particular group with a definite interest. Each of the movies has different causes, but they share similar use of "Muslim terrorism" as the vehicle of reaching the goals. The different context constructs the faces of terrorist in different ways. Muslim terrorist in Middle East context is represented in film "Syriana" with the background of oil business war. The Muslim terrorist in domestic context of the United States is represented in the film "The Siege" with the background of US foreign and domestic policy issues.
Kurixalus absconditus sp. nov., a new species of tree frog of the genus Kurixalus, described from West Kalimantan on the basis of molecular phylogenetic and morphological evidence. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by a combination of following morphological characters: having smaller body size, more prominent of mandibular symphysis, skin smooth on throat, vomerine odontophores two oblique series touching anterior corner of choanae and widely separated, vomerine teeth thick, buccal cavity narrow and deep, choanae with teardrop shaped, single vocal slit, weakly crenulated dermal fringe on fore- and hindlimbs.
Modern warfare is one of popular themes in Hollywood and western films especially after the discourse of "war against terror." This British-production film, "Eye in the Sky" narrates war against terrorism in a unique and detailed way, instead of in black and white perspective. This paper argues that modern war presents many levels of ambiguity. It is aimed at discussing the discourse of ambiguity of modern drone warfare in the film "Eyes of the Sky." This study applies Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis, covering three levels of analysis, micro, macro, and mezzo. Micro level deals with language devices such as words, specific terms, metaphors. Macro level relates with social, political context, and mezzo level deals with the discourse bridging the language in use and social political context. The discourse of ambiguity can be found in many ways, ambiguity of modernness of the warfare devices and weapon when it counters the simplicity of real life of the people in Kenya that becomes 'collateral damage.' Ambiguity is also seen in decision making, in which Colonel Powell, the leader of the mission, changed the "capture" into "kill" terrorists and faces many ambiguities of the officers in charge of making decision for launching the missiles.
Being a migrant worker is a complex experience that is differently represented from one to another, which is well represented in Mahfud Ikhwan's novel, "Dawuk: Kisah Kelabu dari Rumbuk Randu". This novel narrates the life of people living at remote area. Poverty due to generational conflicts of forest management that made limited economic access, force people to migrate to other cities and neighbouring country, Malaysia. This paper is aimed at discussing the complexities of migrant workers represented in the novel. The method of analysis used in this study is Fairclough's CDA, which covers the three levels of analysis, micro, meso and macro. The study shows that the discourse of cultural ambiguity dominated the motive of the characters. In one side, freedom is the biggest motive of the migrant workers represented in the novel, in which they feel more freedom to make choice of living and working in other country, they feel free to make their way of life, not bounded with tradition. They can make money in neighbour country, Malaysia, which is contrary to the situation at home in which they have limited economic access. On the other hand, they are bounded to their home village, feeling peaceful living at home as their goal after they have enough money. The research is limited to the discourse of cultural ambiguity, so that there are many other areas of discourse that can be explored for further research.
The paper aims at discussing the discourse of symbolic violence that happened among young urban people represented in the short story entitled "Benih Jahat itu Tumbuh, Bagaimana Saya Harus Memperlakukannya?" which is included in the collection of short stories "Wabah". The story narrates the life of four young people living in a town in the Covid-19 pandemic situation. They shared the same house harmoniously though they come from different social-cultural background. However, when the pandemic hit the town, their life changed. Each of them had to make their own decision, and this situation leads to the tragic end, because of the symbolic violence happened to them. Focusing the issue of symbolic violence, this paper applies Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis and the Bourdieu's concept of symbolic violence. The study reveals that symbolic violence might happen because of the different social power. Bourdieu's concept of symbolic violence also emphasizes the use of language as the weapon in the violence. This kind of violence has destructive effect for the victim. In this story, the victim is Rahmad, who met his tragic end because of the violence. It is evident that symbolic violence may transform into physical violence.
