The exposure of tomato fruits to unfavorable environments during the postharvest could result in severe losses along the supply chain. In this research, four tomato cultivars were stored in a controlled chamber under three levels of postharvest conditions to investigate the effects of delayed cooling on selected physicochemical quality parameters of the tomatoes. The tomato cultivars were subjected to three postharvest treatments: Immediate storage (IS) at harvest day; delayed storage (DS), leaving tomatoes without cover for one day; and under cover (DSC), separately in a greenhouse, and then stored in a controlled chamber at a temperature of 10 ± 1 °C and relative humidity of 90% ± 3%. Fresh weight, firmness, total soluble solids (TSS), and hue angle (h°) were examined over 15 days, every 5 days. Among the tomato cultivars, Cherry (7160), treated under DS showed the highest weight loss (13.01%) and firmness loss (42.14%) after 15 days of storage. Dabol (large) tomatoes treated with DS showed higher changes in TSS (°Bx) values (4.79 to 5.76). Low changes in hue angle values were found in IS-treated Cherry (7160) tomatoes at the end of the storage period. Overall quality changes were slower for all tomato cultivars treated with IS than with other treatments throughout the storage period. This study indicated the importance of reducing cooling delays to maintain the quality during the postharvest and prolong storage of harvested tomatoes.
Background: Significant technological development and changes happened in the tractor industries. Contrariwise, the test procedures of the major standard development organizations (SDO's) remained unchanged or with a little modification over the years, demanding new tractor test standards or improvement of existing ones for tractor performance, safety, and comfort. Purpose: This study focuses on reviewing the research trends regarding performance, safety and comfort evaluation of agricultural tractors. Based on this review, few recommendations were proposed to revise or improve the current test standards. Review: Tractor power take-off power test using the DC electric dynamometer reduced human error in the testing process and increased the accuracy of the test results. GPS signals were used to determine acceleration and converted into torque. High capacity double extended octagonal ring dynamometer has been designed to measure drawbar forces. Numerical optimization methodology has been used to design three-point hitch. Numerous technologies, driving strategies, and transmission characteristics are being considered for reducing emissions of gaseous and particulate pollutants. Engine emission control technology standards need to be revised to meet the exhaust regulations for agricultural tractors. Finite Element Analysis (FEA) program has been used to design Roll-Over Protective Structures (ROPS). Program and methodology has been presented for testing tractor brake systems. Whole-body vibration emission levels have been found to be very dependent upon the nature of field operation performed, and the test track techniques required development/adaptation to improve their suitability during standardized assessment. Emphasizes should be given to improve visibility and thermal environment inside the cab for tractor operator. Tractors need to be evaluated under electromagnetic compatibility test conditions due to large growing of electronic devices. Research trends reviewed in this paper can be considered for possible revision or improvement of tractor performance, safety, and comfort test standards.
Pepper is one of the most vital agricultural products with high economic value, and pepper production needs to satisfy the growing worldwide population by introducing automatic seedling transplantation techniques. Optimal design and dimensioning of picking device components for an automatic pepper transplanter are crucial for efficient and effective seedling transplantation. Therefore, kinematic analysis, virtual model simulation, and validation testing of a prototype were conducted to propose a best-suited dimension for a clamp-type picking device. The proposed picking device mainly consisted of a manipulator with five grippers and a picking stand. To analyze the influence of design variables through kinematic analysis, 250- to 500-mm length combinations were considered to meet the trajectory requirements and suit the picking workspace. Virtual model simulation and high-speed photography tests were conducted to obtain the kinematic characteristics of the picking device. According to the kinematic analysis, a 350-mm picking stand and a 380-mm manipulator were selected within the range of the considered combinations. The maximum velocity and acceleration of the grippers were recorded as 1.1, 2.2 m/s and 1.3, 23.7 m/s2, along the x- and y-axes, respectively, for 30 to 90 rpm operating conditions. A suitable picking device dimension was identified and validated based on the suitability of the picking device working trajectory, velocity, and acceleration of the grippers, and no significant difference (p ≤ 0.05) occurred between the simulation and validation tests. This study indicated that the picking device under development would increase the pepper seedling picking accuracy and motion safety by reducing the operational time, gripper velocity, acceleration, and mechanical damage.
