Brown rice powder certified reference material, NMIJ CRM 7504-a, for the analysis of pesticide residues was developed by the National Metrology Institute of Japan, part of the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology. Brown rice sample was harvested to contain the pesticides such as etofenprox and fenitrothion, and that was collected from a field in Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan. The certification was carried out using multiple analytical methods such as pressurized liquid extraction, homogenization, and solid-liquid extraction (shaking); the values of target pesticides were obtained by isotope dilution mass spectrometry. Certified values were 0.19 +/- 0.05 mg/kg and 0.109 +/- 0.017 mg/kg for etofenprox and fenitrothion, respectively.
The process of biosorption of trivalent chromium (Cr(3+)) by live culture of Spirulina platensis and the sorption potential by the dried biomass, in both free and immobilized states have been investigated for a simulated chrome liquor in the concentration range of 100-4500 ppm. Both live and dried biomass were very good biosorbents as they could remove high amounts of chromium from tannery wastewater. Polyurethane foam and sodium alginate were used as immobilizing agents and their performances compared. Biosorption kinetic data on Cr(3+) sorption onto dried biomass were analyzed using pseudo-first-and pseudo-second-order kinetic models in batch column experiments. The second-order equation was more appropriate to predict the rate of biosorption. Subsequently, the effects of height of packing & diameter of the column, concentration of blue-green algae (BGA) in varying amounts of sodium alginate, chromium concentration were studied. The results fit into both Langmuir & Freundlich isotherm models with very high regression coefficients. Furthermore, equilibrium studies using retan chrome liquor (RCL), with a chromium concentration of 1660 ppm, obtained from a tannery also showed promising results. In general, our studies indicate the efficacy of the algal species in removal of chromium from tannery wastewater.
The National Metrology Institute of Japan has issued a certified reference material of bioethanol (NMIJ CRM 8301-a) for the quantification of water, methanol, sulfur, and copper. This paper presents technical details for the characterization of the water in NMIJ CRM 8301-a. The characterization was performed using coulometric and volumetric Karl-Fischer (KF) titrations. To reduce moisture absorption, sample handling and KF titration were performed in a glove box under a dried nitrogen atmosphere. In addition, a rubber cap with a three-way valve was attached to the ampoule immediately after opening so as to minimize the influence of moisture. Sample aliquots were obtained using a gas-tight microsyringe through the valve, and injected into the KF cell as soon as possible. The certified value of water obtained from coulometric and volumetric KF titrations was 1.688 mg g -1 , and the expanded uncertainty (coverage factor, k = 2) was 0.028 mg g -1 . This CRM would be suitable for the monitoring of water in bioethanol and similar matrices.
