El turismo alternativo fomenta la participación en actividades recreativas en contacto con la naturaleza y las expresiones culturales respetando el patrimonio natural, cultural, e histórico del lugar visitado. Son escasos los estudios donde se aborde una postura crítica y donde se realice un recuento detallado de las condiciones de su inserción en la política nacional. Este artículo tiene como propósito analizar su proceso de incorporación en las políticas públicas de México. A partir de ello, se consultaron documentos institucionales y se revisó literatura especializada durante el periodo 1980 al 2019. Las principales reflexiones hacen hincapié en que pese a su integración en planes y programas; en la práctica no necesariamente ha contribuido a mitigar los impactos negativos del turismo.
