RESUMOO presente trabalho objetivou mapear a disseminação dos casos confirmados da COVID-19 no estado do Maranhão, nos meses de março a julho de 2020. Para isso, foram coletados dados dos casos confirmados e óbitos na SES/MA (Secretária de Saúde do estado do Maranhão), e dados no formato vetoriais dos municípios de interesse da região de estudo do Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística (IBGE, 2019). Foram realizados mapeamentos da difusão espacial da doença no software QGIS 3.10, utilizando métodos de interpolação pelo Inverso da Distância Ponderada (IDW) e de categorização gradual-quantitativa, pautada nas normativas da cartografia temática. Os resultados alcançados pelo mapeamento da difusão espaço-temporal possibilitaram a identificação de aspectos coexistentes da difusão hierárquica no início da pandemia no estado e por contágio ao longo do tempo até quatro meses do primeiro caso no estado. Verificou-se um total de 106.906 (cento e seis mil e novecentos e seis) casos confirmados em 216 (duzentos e dezesseis) dos 217 (duzentos e dezessete) municípios do estado, com 2676 (dois mil seiscentos e setenta e seis) óbitos registrados. Conclui-se que a espacialização dos dados da COVID-19, possibilitou uma análise de como a doença difundiu-se por praticamente todo território do estado maranhense. Enfatiza-se que as geotecnologias e técnicas computacionais oriundas de geoprocessamento, trabalhadas em ambiente de sistema de informações geográficas (SIGs) apresentam-se como ferramentas primordiais e eficazes para análise geral do território. Uma vez que permitem a construção e atualização de banco de dados, para a elaboração de produtos cartográficos com o alcance de respostas de urgências, que podem contribuir com o planejamento e ações do poder público principalmente os setores de saúde pública.
