Die einst totgesagte Textsorte der literarhistorischen Gesamtdarstellung scheint fröhliche Urständ zu feiern. Bedarf besteht offenbar nicht nur an Nachschlagewerken, sondern vor allem nach einer Gesamtanschauung eines nur im Nacherzählen vollziehbaren Prozesses, eben des bewegten Systems einer ,Literatur': Bedarf also nicht nur auf Seiten der Lernenden, sondern primär bei der Forschung. Ob die Aufgabe durch Team-Arbeit jeweilen am besten zu lösen ist oder, wie vor allem in der unbeschwerten Jugendzeit der Germanistik, durch den Kraftakt eines einzelnen, wird je nach Absicht und Umfang zu entscheiden sein. Wenn sich im vorliegenden Fall sogar eine internationale Forschergrupe zusammengetan hat, die nach Alter und Interesse einigermaßen einheitlich ist und unter der Führung eines so kritischen und kompetenten Herausgebers wie Heinzle steht, darf man ein Optimum, das heißt ein durchdachtes, ausgewogenes Ganzes erwarten (mit von der Partie sind Wolfgang Haubrichs und Gisela Vollmann-Profe für Band I, L. Peter Johnson für Band II/i, Johannes Janota und Joel Lefebvre für Band III).Bedauerlich bleibt, daß auch hier das Erscheinen sich wie üblich über Jahre hin verzögert. Was heute allein vorliegt, ist immerhin der Halbband des Herausgebers, der damit auch das methodische Programm des ganzen Werks formuliert und vorführt. Ersichtlich ist auch der grundlegende Entscheid für die Disposition: der Gesamtstoff ist primär nach Epochen gegliedert und erst in zweiter Linie nach Gattungen. Und bewußt und guten Gewissens wird eine Geschichte der deutschen Literatur vorgelegt, die die Ausbildung "volkssprachlicher Schriftkultur in Deutschland" (S. 9) verfolgen will. Gerade das 13. Jahrhundert ist dafür eine entscheidende Epoche: auch wenn Heinzle pragmatisch und ,,schlechten Gewissens" an Etiketten wie Blütezeit und Spätmittelalter festhält und für seine Epoche einen konventionellen Untertitel wählt ("Wandlungen und Neuansätze"), so ist sie ihm doch wesentlich eine Epoche der Innovation und Integration: mit dem Erscheinen neuer Formtypen und Funktionen, mit dem Durchbruch vor allem der Prosa in verschiedensten Bereichen -womit auch, nachgerade selbstverständlich, der Literaturbegriff sämtliche Formen der Schriftlichkeit umfaßt.Die Rückkehr zur Literaturgeschichtschreibung hängt natürlich zusammen mit den neuen Einsichten in die vielfältige Bedingtheit der Literatur als Element, Produkt und Medium eines politisch-gesellschaftlich-wirtschaftlich-ideellen Gesamtgeschehens. Dabei geht es nicht mehr wie in der Literatursoziologie der ersten Stunde um irgendwelche Herleitungen, sondern um ein kompliziertes Eingebettetsein der Texte in Funktionen, Gebrauchssituationen oder, mit einem Lieblingsbegriff Heinzles, in die ,,Lebenspraxis" (vgl. S. n). Damit ergeben sich freilich neue Schwierigkeiten. Heinzle sagt einmal (S. 114), man komme nicht zu ,,einer literarhistorischen Darstellung, die diesen Namen wirklich verdient", ohne die Auftraggeber, die Gönner der Berufsdichter im einzelnen Fall zu kennen.
