O presente artigo é uma análise do texto Die Bürgerpflicht der Frau (1895), da escritora alemã Lily Braun. O texto é um marco na história do movimento de mulheres alemão e oferece importantes subsídios para a reflexão sobre as contradições e tensões que marcam o pensamento e a atuação de Lily Braun. No artigo, ofereço um breve resumo da vida e obra da autora, apresento os contornos gerais do texto e procuro situá-lo em seu contexto histórico-social. Levanto a hipótese de que o movimento geral do texto de Lily Braun se explica como uma tentativa de expandir a esfera da empatia e o arco dos direitos para incluir segmentos da sociedade – como as mulheres e a classe trabalhadora mais pobre – então largamente excluídos. Essa tentativa deixa uma série de características textuais que procuro analisar em profundidade.
