This study assessed the community health needs of Barangay Hipodromo, Cebu City, Cebu, Philippines. It further described the profile of the community in terms of: family structure and its characteristics; socio-economic status; home and environment status; health practices; and identified community health concerns of the respondents. The key findings were the bases of the proposed action plan.A descriptive research design was utilized with a researcher-modified questionnaire and follow-up interviews of 308 respondents. Treatment of data included frequency, simple percentage, sum of ranks, and common themes.The findings showed that a majority of the respondents belong to the age bracket of 40-49 years old, married, has a nuclear type of family consisting of 3-4 children, unemployed with a monthly income of less than 5,000 Philippine pesos, had high school education, and Roman Catholics. Homes are owned, made up of mixed materials; uses electricity; has a private source of drinking water; uses charcoal and firewood for cooking; has open drainage system; disposes garbage with open containers as method of waste segregation; has water-sealed latrines; backyard garden has ornamental plants and raises chickens; seeks professional help from the barangay health station; colds, cough and influenza were the common illnesses in the past six months; they self-medicate as initial treatment; claims that hypertension is their heredo-familial disease; breastfeeds their infants; completed immunization status of the first child; utilizes the barangay health station for medical and dental check-up; does not practice family planning methods. Based on the findings of the study, the community health needs were identified with pressing concerns on drugs, alcoholism, poor ventilation, noise pollution, and availability of medicines and supplies in the barangay health station. As a result, the researchers recommended the immediate implementation of the proposed action plan.
This study ascertained the awareness of faculty members on intellectual property and their rights. The study utilized the descriptive quantitative design was conducted in University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue, Mandaue City, Cebu, Philippines. Researcher-made questionnaire was used to measure the awareness of faculty members on intellectual property and their rights. The survey includes two parts. The first part is the profile of the faculty members. The second part ascertained the awareness of faculty members on six areas: patents, utility models, industrial designs, geographical indications, trademarks, and copyrights. The data was collected from June 2018 to October 2018 among 102 faculty members. Statistical treatment used was weighted mean, frequencies and sum of ranks.Findings revealed that majority of the respondents were female, 20-25 years old, full-time faculty, with Bachelor’s degree, from the College of Business & Accountancy and have served the university from 0-3 years. They were moderately aware with copyrights, patents and trademarks. They were less aware with utility models, industrial design and geographical indications. Sources of information on intellectual property and rights include the tri-media, colleague and friends. Based on the findings of the study, there is a need to strengthen the knowledge and awareness of faculty members on intellectual property and rights.Keywords: Utility Models; Industrial Design; Geographical Indications; Faculty; Philippines
The Republic Act No. 9262 otherwise known as Anti-Violence against Women and Their Children Act of 2004 provides the legal framework of the country’s effort to address violence committed against women and children in keeping with the fundamental freedom guaranteed under the Constitution and the Provisions of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This study determined the awareness on Anti-Violence against Women and their Children Law among women of Village Looc, Mandaue City, Philippines in 2011. This study utilized the descriptive-correlational design. The respondents were 96 women who were selected through purposive sampling with the inclusion criteria that they must be at least 16 years old and living with a partner. Majority of the respondents were 25-65 years old, single with live-in partner, has 0-3 children, high school graduates and belonged to the low monthly income bracket. Most of the respondents expressed that they have acquired awareness on intimate partner violence from watching television. Majority of the respondents were aware of the intimate partner violence in RA 9262. There was a significant relationship between the modes of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) and level of awareness of the respondents on RA 9262. This study concludes that full awareness on RA 9262 through the modes of IEC is necessary to ensure protection of women and their children. The conduct of extension services in partner communities addresses the fourth function of a university: community extension. It is essential for the university to provide opportunities of learning and assistance to residents in the community especially those who has no access to education or work opportunities. The lessons learned by students in the classroom and the knowledge and skills of teachers and non-teaching staff should cascade to partner communities. This descriptive quantitative survey conducted in 2016, sampled 100 mothers in Village Opao, Mandaue City, Cebu to ascertain the community needs assessment prior to implementation of extension activities. Village Opao, Mandaue City is officially adopted by University of Cebu Lapu-Lapu and Mandaue in 2016 as its second partner community. The research instrument was created by the researchers with questions on 4 sections: personal information, housing and environment, health, and community organizations. The mothers were purposively identified with the following inclusion criteria: 16 to 80 years old, with a child/with children and registered in the village as a voter. Descriptive statistics specifically mode was used. Researchers have identified that the sustainable programs of the university for Village Opao, Mandaue City shall include literacy, livelihood, backyard gardening, livestock raising, flooding, family planning, administration of tetanus toxoid, and community participation programs.
