RESUMO -Estudou-se o processo de bioadsorção dos íons Cd 2+ e Zn 2+ , em soluções monocomponentes, pelo resíduo da extração do alginato da alga Sargassum filipendula. A técnica de espectroscopia na região do infravermelho (FT-IR) foi utilizada para a avaliação da participação dos grupos funcionais responsáveis pela remoção dos íons. Verificou-se que os grupos carboxílico e sulfato são relevantes para o processo de remoção. O estudo cinético foi ajustado de acordo com os modelos de pseudo primeira ordem e pseudo segunda ordem, onde um melhor ajuste foi obtido com o modelo de pseudo primeira ordem. Os dados de equilíbrio foram ajustados de acordo com as isotermas de Langmuir e Freundlich. As capacidades máximas de adsorção foram determinadas de acordo com o modelo de Langmuir. Os valores obtidos para o resíduo da extração foram de 0,64 mmol g -1 e 1,00 mmol g -1 para os íons Cd 2+ e Zn 2+ , respectivamente. A dessorção foi estudada utilizando-se o CaCl 2 (0,5 M) como eluente e foi atingida em aproximadamente 1 hora com taxas de eluição superiores a 90% e uma baixa perda de massa do adsorvente. Os resultados indicam que mesmo após a extração do alginato, o resíduo da extração ainda possui um potencial de aplicação na remoção dos íons metálicos pelo processo de bioadsorção.
INTRODUÇÃOA presença de metais pesados e, consequentemente, sua remoção em efluentes líquidos representa um motivo de grande preocupação devido à toxidade e capacidade de acumulação nos organismos vivos. As principais fontes de efluentes contendo os metais cádmio e zinco envolvem o setor industrial de metalurgia, eletrodeposição, cerâmicas e baterias (Sarada et al., 2014).Os métodos tradicionais de tratamento de efluentes contendo íons metálicos como a precipitação, membranas, troca iônica e coagulação possuem a desvantagem de não serem eficientes no tratamento de efluentes com baixas concentrações de metais pesados. Nesse contexto, a bioadsorção se apresenta como um método efetivo e economicamente viável na remoção de metais pesados em efluentes líquidos (Deng et al., 2007). Dentre os adsorventes
