La presente investigación tuvo como propósito, determinar la sostenibilidad del sistema de agua potable en la comunidad Paso Ancho del municipio de Estelí. El método que se utilizó es observacional, según su enfoque filosófico es cuantitativo, de corte transversal y de acuerdo a su nivel es descriptivo. Se utilizó la metodología PROPILAS (Proyecto Piloto de Agua y Saneamiento), la cual tiene como propósito validar y sistematizar propuestas bajo concepto de sostenibilidad, evaluando los factores de gestión para la operación y mantenimiento de sistemas de agua potable rurales, a fin de determinar la sostenibilidad de los sistemas. Se obtuvo como resultado del factor estado del sistema una puntuación de 3.2, este se encuentra en el rango de 2.51-3.50 por lo que se les considera en estado regular o medianamente sostenible. La evaluación de la gestión administrativa se determinó una puntuación de 2.23 se encuentra en el rango de 1.51-2.50 esto quiere decir que se encuentra en estado malo y no es sostenible (grave proceso de deterioro). La administración no cuenta con un cronograma de reuniones, no tiene archivos ni expedientes de las modificaciones del sistema, no realizan capacitaciones del manejo del sistema. El puntaje obtenido en el factor de operación y mantenimiento en el sistema fue de 1.83, lo que indica que se localiza en el rango 1.51-2.50 esto quiere decir que se encuentra en estado malo y no es sostenible (grave proceso de deterioro). Se concluye que el índice de sostenibilidad de todo el sistema de agua potable de acuerdo a los factores de sostenibilidad se califica como un sistema medianamente sostenible o en estado regular. El agua que consumen en esta comunidad desde el punto de vista físico-químico es de buena calidad por lo tanto es apta para su consumo humano.
