OZONE APPLICATION FOR MANGANESE REMOVAL FROM ACID MINE DRAINAGE INB / CALDAS AbstractOzone, allotrope of oxygen is found in the stratosphere and has high oxidizing activity and disinfection action. Its reduction to molecular oxygen is spontaneous and has high potential. The use of ozone in the treatment of acid mine drainage is emerging in Brazil and is found under the pilot phase in the Nuclear Industries of Brazil in partnership with BrasilOzônio company, Foundation Park of High Technology Iperó Region and adjacencies and University of Extremo Sul Catarinense, funded by the National Bank of Economic and Social Development. In this context, ozone as an oxidizing agent treats effectively acid mine drainage from waste rock piles, characterized by acidic pH, high concentration of manganese and iron, among other metals. Ozone application was performed in reactors coupled with recirculation systems by means of centrifugal pumps in a treatment system designed according to the feed water flow. The optimization process involved the variation of the input O 2 flow, feed water flow rate O 3 concentration , recirculation of the mixture water/O 3 and residence
