Brill, I960.Nul, assurement, n'est mieux qualifi6 que le Dr. Leemans pour aborder avec succes les problkmes de la vie economique de l'ancienne Mesopotamie: il vient de nous le prouver une fois encore dans ce livre 1).Son but a 6te de reunir les donn&es que peuvent offrir les textes actuellement connus sur le commerce exterieur de la Mesopotamie m&ridionale a l'apoque babylonienne ancienne (dynasties d'Isin et de Larsa et premiere dynastie babylonienne, soit, en gros, entre 195o et 16oo00 av. J.C.): nous sommes donc en presence, avant tout, d'un recueil de documents. Le merite de Mr Leemans est, d'abord, d'avoir su les decouvrir (leur inter&t eu 6gard au probleme envisage ne se d&cle pas toujours au premier abord); ensuite, de les avoir interpretes avec beaucoup de perspicacit6, jointe, generalement, a une grande prudence, et, enfin, d'avoir tentd, avec leur aide, une synthese, tout en soulignant tres lucidement les limites que le caractere fragmentaire d'une telle documentation impose a une tentative de ce genre. Les textes en question se repartissent g6ographiquement en trois groupes: ceux d'Ur, ceux de Larsa et ceux de la Babylonie (Sippar et Babylone).I. -Ur. L'auteur reprend ici l'6tude penetrante deja consacree au commerce d'Ur par L. Oppenheim 2). Le grand int&r&t des documents d'Ur est de nous donner comme une ,,coupe" de l'histoire du commerce maritime de la vieille cit a travers deux siecles, cela grace a trois lots homogenes de textes, trois ,,archives" embrassant plus de 15o ans. I? Les archives de Lu-Enlilla. Ce petit lot de 4 textes (UET III, nos 751, I5~I1, 1666 et 1689), contemporains d'Ibbi-Sin, dernier roi de la 3e dynastie d'Ur (aux environs de 2030 av. J.C.) 3) atteste l'existence d'un commerce rdgulier, a cette 6poque, entre Ur et le pays de Magan (que Leemans identifie avec le pays d'Oman, sur la c6te orientale de l'Arabie: voir ci-dessous, p. 104). Ce trafic est aux mains du temples de Nanna, le grand dieu d'Ur; c'est un fonctionnaire de ce temple, Lu-Enlilla, qui en parait sp'cialement charge 4).
