Mono-and bis(guanidine) ligands stabilise bis-μ-oxido dicopper(III) complexes. Here, the formation of these complexes has been investigated in detail by means of lowtemperature stopped-flow techniques for the monoguanidine 2-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMGdmap) and the related bis(guanidine) 1,3-bis(N,N,N′,N′-tetramethylguanidino)propane (btmgp). Low-temperature IR studies in solution support the formation of bis-μ-oxido complexes. For both systems, no intermediates on the pathways to the bis-μ-oxido complexes could be detected; this has been explained through extensive DFT calculations. In the first step,

Based on the equilibrium geometries of [Cu2(dbdmed)2O2](2+) and [Cu2(en)2O2](2+) obtained within density-functional theory, we investigate their molecular electronic structure and optical response. Thereby results from occupation-constrained as well as time-dependent DFT (ΔSCF and TDDFT) are compared with Green's function-based approaches within many-body perturbation theory such as the GW approximation (GWA) to the quasiparticle energies and the Bethe-Salpeter equation (BSE) approach to the optical absorption. Concerning the ground-state energies and geometries, no clear trend with respect to the amount of exact exchange in the DFT calculations is found, and a strong dependence on the basis sets is to be noted. They affect the energy difference between bis-μ-oxo and μ-η(2):η(2)-peroxo complexes by as much as 0.8 eV (18 kcal/mol). Even stronger, up to 5 eV is the influence of the exchange-correlation functional on the gap values obtained from the Kohn-Sham eigenvalues. Not only the value itself but also the trends observed upon the bis-μ-oxo to μ-η(2):η(2)-peroxo transition are affected. In contrast, excitation energies obtained from ΔSCF and TDDFT are comparatively robust with respect to the details of the calculations. Noteworthy, in particular, is the near quantitative agreement between TDDFT and GWA+BSE for the optical spectra of [Cu2(en)2O2](2+).

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations with localized as well as plane-wave basis functions are performed for the recently reported dicopper thiolate species Cu2 (NGuaS)2 Cl2 [NGuaS = 2-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidino) benzenethiolate, C11 H16 N3 S] and its bromo derivative [Neuba et al., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2012, 51, 1714.]. For both hybrid and semilocal functionals, the neutral complexes are found to have broken symmetry (BS) character, with electron paramagnetic resonance silent, antiferromagnetically coupled [Cu(2+) …Cu(2+) ] site in which the coupling is driven by super exchange interaction within the Cu2 S2 diamond core. The accurate theoretical description of the geometric structure, however, provides a major challenge for DFT: (i) the multideterminant character of the ground state wave function has to be covered by the BS approach. It requires (ii) metageneralized gradient approximations, that is hybrid functionals with an explicit dependence on the kinetic energy of the individual orbitals: In combination with a dispersion correction, the metafunctional TPSSh results in a CuCu distance close to the experimentally observed value of 2.7 Å. For the negative charge state of the complex, a mixed-valent [Cu(1.5+) …Cu(1.5+) ] electronic structure with a smaller CuCu distance of 2.6 Å is predicted, similar to the value of the CuA site of cytochrome c oxidase.

We have synthesized and characterized five copper(I) complexes with unsymmetrically substituted thiourea ligands. These include two coordination polymers, [Cu(S tu NH)Br] n and [Cu(S tu(Py) NH)Br] n , two dinuclear complexes, [Cu 2 (S tu NH) 4 Br 2 ] and [Cu 2 (S tu(Py) NH) 2 Br 2 (MeCN) 2 ], and one hexanuclear complex, [Cu 6 (S tu N) 6 ]. The Cu atoms of the coordination polymers are connected through alternating thione and bromide bridges and the dimeric structures through thione bridges. The thionebridged structures show similarities with the biologically highly [a] 1266 Scheme 2. Reaction scheme leading to the copper(I) complexes C1-C5. This work presents for the first time the impact of relativistic effects on the CuO peroxide dicopper(ii)-bis(μ-oxo) dicopper (iii) equilibrium bonding motif in existing tyrosinase model complexes [Cu(btmgp)(μ-O)] and [Cu{HC(tBuPz)Py}(O)] [S. Herres et al., Inorg. Chim. Acta, 2005, 358, 1089; S. Herres-Pawlis et al., Eur. J. Inorg. Chem., 2005, 3815; A. Hoffmann et al., Angew. Chem., Int. Ed., 2013, 52, 5398]. We use density functional theory (TPSSh/cc-pVTZ+D3BJ) with various relativistic approaches (ECPs, DKH, ZORA) to tackle the question of impact and find, as already known for small model complexes in the literature, that the O core is more stabilized with respect to the P core by the relativistic influence [D. G. Liakos and F. Neese, J. Chem. Theory Comput., 2011, 7, 1511]. Whereas DKH and ZORA yield similar results, ECPs underestimate the predicted effect. By calculating the functional of the relativistic overlap change, we can exactly identify the relativistic changes at the molecular orbital level and narrow down the affected MOs. Thus, by performing a detailed bond analysis utilizing the overlap population, we are able to rationalize the effects at the chemical level by finding relativistic bond stabilization in both isomers, which is more dominating in the O core. In conclusion, relativistic effects already play an important role in dicopper cores and should be considered.

Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations are presented for the dicopper thiolate complex Cu2 (NGuaS)2 Cl2 [NGuaS=2-(1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidino) benzenethiolate] with a special focus on the bonding mechanism of the Cu2 S2 Cl2 core and the spectroscopic response. This complex is relevant for the understanding of dicopper redox centers, for example, the CuA center. Its UV/Vis absorption is theoretically studied and found to be similar to other structural CuA models. The spectrum can be roughly divided in the known regions of metal d-d absorptions and metal to ligand charge transfer regions. Nevertheless the chloride ions play an important role as electron donors, with the thiolate groups as electron acceptors. The bonding mechanism is dissected by means of charge decomposition analysis which reveals the large covalency of the Cu2 S2 diamond core mediated between Cu dz2 and S-S π and π* orbitals forming Cu-S σ bonds. Measured resonant Raman spectra are shown for 360- and 720-nm excitation wavelength and interpreted using the calculated vibrational eigenmodes and frequencies. The calculations help to rationalize the varying resonant behavior at different optical excitations. Especially the phenylene rings are only resonant for 720 nm. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
