In this work the suitability of selected commercially available hyperbranched polymers and ionic liquids as entrainers for the extractive distillation and as extraction solvents for the liquid–liquid extraction is investigated. Based on thermodynamic studies on the influence of hyperbranched polymers and ionic liquids on the vapor–liquid and liquid–liquid equilibrium of the azeotropic ethanol–water and THF–water systems, process simulations are carried out, which allow evaluating the potential of hyperbranched polymers and ionic liquids as selective components for the mentioned applications in terms of feasibility and energetic efficiency. Both hyperbranched polymers and ionic liquids break a variety of azeotropic systems. Since their selectivity, capacity, viscosity, and thermal stability can be customized, they appear superior to many conventional entrainers and extraction solvents. For the ethanol–water separation, the nonvolatile substances hyperbranched polyglycerol and [EMIM]+[BF4]− show a remarkable entrainer performance and therefore enable extractive distillation processes, which require less energy than the conventional process using 1,2‐ethanediol as an entrainer. Evaluation of a new THF–water separation process indicates the competitiveness of the suggested process and a considerable potential of using hyperbranched polymers as extraction solvents. © 2004 American Institute of Chemical Engineers AIChE J 50: 2439–2454, 2004

The use of ionic liquids (ILs) in chemistry and electrochemistry has been studied for some decades. Only recently, researchers have focused on the suitability of ILs as selective solvents in the field of separation technology. ILs represent suitable entrainers and extraction solvents for the separation of azeotropic mixtures by means of extractive distillation and solvent extraction. In this work, ternary vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibria of the azeotropic mixtures ethanol + water and THF + water containing different kinds of commercially available ILs are presented. The four ionic liquids used are derived from butyl-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [BMIM] + [BF 4 ]by systematic variation of the cation or the anion. The influence of the IL structure on the relative volatility of the low boiling component in extractive distillation and on the selectivity in solvent extraction processes is discussed in this work.

Dendritic macromolecules, such as hyperbranched polymers are increasingly being studied in the context of encapsulation. The intensive research on encapsulation using hyperbranched polymers is motivated by factors such as a cost-effective polymer synthesis and a customizable property profile. Hence, in the past few years, hyperbranched polymers have been employed as carriers for several guest molecules such as dyes, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, catalysts, and aromatic hydrocarbons. However, hyperbranched polymers compete not only with perfectly structured dendrimers but also with conventional carrier molecules in terms of price and performance criteria such as processability, loading capacity, delivery efficiency and/or reduction of toxic side effects. This article aims at reviewing the research and development (R&D) in the field of encapsulation using hyperbranched polymers. Based on a summary of the most relevant R&D results and encapsulation technologies in this area, progress and challenges are discussed and new emerging applications are described. The most prominent emerging applications include the encapsulation and/or controlled release of (i) unstable or sensitive components (such as those used in the field of personal care), (ii) pharmaceutical substances (using hyperbranched carrier polymers with a narrow molar mass distribution), and (iii) inorganic nanoparticles to design versatile nanoreactors for catalytic applications.

The aim of this work is to evaluate the feasibility of hydrophilic silica aerogels as drug carriers and to investigate the influence of the aerogels properties on the release rate of poorly water-soluble drugs. Hydrophilic silica aerogels of different densities were loaded with two model drugs, ketoprofen and griseofulvin, by adsorption from their solution in supercritical CO2. It is demonstrated that up to 30 wt% of ketoprofen and 5.4 wt% of griseofulvin can be deposited on hydrophilic aerogels through physical adsorption. The obtained drug-aerogel formulations were characterized by IR- and UV-spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Release kinetics of both drugs were studied in vitro. The release rate of ketoprofen from the drug-aerogel formulation is much faster than that of the corresponding crystalline drugs. The release rate of ketoprofen increases in 500% and that of griseofulvin in 450%, respectively. The reasons for the release enhancement are the enlarged specific surface area of drugs by adsorption on aerogels compared to their crystalline form and the immediate collapse of aerogel network in aqueous media. The dissolution rate of poorly water soluble drugs can be significantly enhanced by adsorption on highly porous hydrophilic silica aerogels.

The aim of this work was to study the feasibility of hyperbranched polymers as drug carriers by employing different microparticle formation methods and the influence of loading methods on release kinetics. Commercially available hyperbranched polyester (Perstorp) and three polyesteramides (DSM) were loaded with the pharmaceutical acetaminophen. The gas antisolvent precipitation (GAS), the coacervation, and the particles from gas saturated solutions (PGSS) are among conventional processes that were used to prepare microparticles of drug-loaded hyperbranched polyesters for the first time. For preparing solid dispersions of drug-loaded hyperbranched polyesteramides the solvent method was applied. Infrared (IR) and differential thermal analysis (DTA) studies suggest that acetaminophen is partly dissolved in the polymer matrix and partly crystallized outside the polymer matrix. For acetaminophen-loaded polyesters prepared by the GAS method, the presence of free drugs is predominant when compared to microparticles prepared by the coacervation method. This event disappears for microparticles prepared by the PGSS method. Moreover, the release of drug from drug-loaded Bol-GAS is biphasic, where the initial burst (48%), indicating the presence of unincorporated drugs, is followed by a slow-release phase, suggesting the diffusion of drug through polymer matrices. The release of drugs from drug-loaded Bol-PGSS do not show this behavior since the drug is better dissolved or dispersed in polymer matrices. In the case of drug-loaded polyesteramides, coevaporates prepared from 3 hyperbranched structures (H1690, H1200, and H1500) using the solvent method result in different release kinetics. The hydrophobic characteristic of hyperbranched polyesteramide H1500 shows the biphasic release kinetic whereas the drug released from hydrophilic matrices H1690 and H1200 exhibits fast release comparable to that of pure drug.
