Contract KAT2 will altogether produce about 8.6 m. t of excavated material. Most of this will be used as fill for various purposes or processed as aggregates for concrete production. This article deals with the management of the material excavated from the tunnel and of material, which has been affected by ground improvement measures or could have been contaminated during excavation or transport. Causes for chemical problems and risks with waste are identified, and possibilities and solutions for technically correct recycling or disposal in compliance with the conditions of waste management law are presented. As an example, the influence of selected additives such as cement or resin foam is discussed. There is also a description of investigation results into the evidence that high concentrations occur in the determination of iron and aluminium in the eluate. These parameters are of significance for the recycling of rock since they are limited under the Austrian federal waste management plan (BAWP).Im Baulos KAT2 fallen insgesamt rund 8,6 Mio. t Tunnelausbruchmaterial an.
Contract KAT2 of the approximately 33 km long, twin‐bore Koralm Tunnel will produce about 8.6 mio. t of excavated material. For this reason, the maximum degree of recycling of the material was intended right from the start of the design process. This was planned including consideration of the optimal cost‐effectiveness of overall materials management with minimal environmental impact through the minimisation of transport processes and land use as well as generally sparing use of resources. On contract KAT2, more than 50% of the material excavated from the tunnel can be recycled for technical use on site. The material is used as aggregates for concrete and as fill (anti‐capillary layers, frost protection layers, filter gravel, sealing layers) for the earthworks in the open air.One difficulty is the fact that according to the generally applicable legal situation under the federal waste management plan (BAWP 2011) and the landfill regulations (DVO 2008), material excavated from tunnels is considered to be waste. In order to ensure proper handling while considering the legal situation, the chemical composition of the waste has to be established and taken into account. On the other hand the technical requirements for construction are binding. This resulted in numerous potential conflicts in connection with the material produced from the tunnel, the chemical evaluation and the decision whether to reuse or recycle it starting with the design of the project up until the time the project was completed. Aufbereitung.
A 3D model for the prediction of the effective thermal conductivity of porous building blocks is introduced. Simulations are performed directly on the microstructure using voxel images and the finite element technique. Very good agreement with analytical solutions is achieved. The model is used to investigate the miscalculation effect of 2D simulations, clearly indicating the need for a 3D model. Furthermore, a method for incorporating radiative heat transfer at the microscale is implemented and applied on a synthetic sample, demonstrating the influence of thermal radiation on the effective thermal conductivity.
The construction of the approx. 33 km long, twin‐bore Koralm Tunnel will produce about 5 million m3 of tunnel spoil. For this reason, a maximum degree of recycling of the material and landfill within the area of the three construction contracts were already intended at the start of design work. This had to consider optimal cost‐effectiveness of the entire materials management with minimal environmental impact through the minimising of transport journeys and areas exploited as well as the saving resources as far as possible. Specifically for the design of contract KAT2, the production and demand of material had to be compared from design to construction, taking into account the landfill and recycling possibilities while observing the technical constraints and the regulations concerning the chemical properties of waste.
