We present the largest personal series of cases of inverted papilloma to date. Our data suggest that conservative approaches, especially endoscopic removal, can be performed on selected lesions with recurrence rates that are comparable to those of more aggressive techniques. Those inverted papillomas that recur after treatment may represent a subset of lesions with an inherent aggressiveness, for which optimal treatment has yet to be determined.
Postoperative medical complications in these elderly, debilitated patients related to pulmonary problems and alcohol withdrawal were statistically far more important in negatively affecting the outcomes and true costs of microsurgical reconstruction.
Although there is an increased trend in replacement of soft-tissue volume with autologous fat transfer, the literature fails to provide definitive evidence of fat survival. A large-scale clinical assessment using three-dimensional volumetric imaging would provide useful outcome data.
