This content downloaded from 128.210.126.199 on Fri, 19 Jun 2015 16:49:46 UTC All use subject to JSTOR Terms and ConditionsABSTRACT: During recent studies on the parasites of bats in the province of Morona-Santiago in the Oriente region of Ecuador, South America, the following digenetic trematodes were recovered from 100 hosts: Parabascoides cephalolecithus sp. n.; Prosthodendrium conturbatum Teixeira de Freitas 1960; Prosthodendrium megovarium sp. n.; Acanthatrium fugleri sp. n.; Tremajoannes buckleyi Saoud 1964; Apharyngotrema apharyngotrema gen. et sp. n.; Anenterotrema mesolecitha sp. n.; Urotrema scabridum Braun 1900. Rhopalias coronatus (Rudolphi 1819) Stiles et Hassall, a parasite of opossums, and Nudacotyle novicia Barker 1916, a parasite of rodents, were recovered for the first time from a bat. Parabascoides cephalolecithus sp. n. (Figs. 1-3) Host: Carollia castanea (Allen). Habitat: Small intestine. Locality: Sucua, Morona-Santiago Province, Ecuador. Holotype: USNM Helm. Coll. No. 74574; paratype 73075. Diagnosis Based on 13 mature specimens. Body inverted flask-shaped, spinose, 2.2-2.95 mm (2.63 mm) long by 1.1-1.6 mm (1.44 mm) wide. Oral sucker subterminal, 288-380 (339) in diameter. Acetabulum slightly less than one-fourth of body length from anterior extremity, at median line, 225-288 (269) in diameter. Pharynx muscular, 138-163 (150) in diameter. Esophagus short. Ceca long, terminating one-fifth body length from posterior extremity. Ovary lobed, dextral, situated lateral or posterolateral to acetabulum, 250-450 (350) in diameter. Seminal receptacle enlarged area of oviduct, passing into ootype which lies dorsolateral to ovary and is surrounded by Mehlis' gland. Laurer's canal passing dorsally from seminal receptacle, terminating on dorsal surface of body. Uterus loops extensively in postacetabular region between testes and ovary, filling posterior half of body. Ova numerous, 23 by 10.
