Within education, and in relation to the physical-digital dialogue, we can observe the emergence of new tools, or tool sets, that facilitate experimentation in architectural education, among these, the Fab Lab movement, where 1:1 scale prototyping in construction become more accessible. The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, considered the frontrunners in the integration of this mission within their architectural and construction based educational programs, bring materialising design to the centre of their educational methodology. Based on this, IAAC educational programs explore and produce a large series of experiments and prototypes, aiming to propose a different paradigm to the current productive system. This paper analyses series of projects co-developed by students, staff and industry collaborators with this aim. Through a design/build methodology the paper exhibits the importance of this approach to not only envision the future habitat of our society, but also to build it in the present.
Intense urbanization has led us to rethink construction and demolition practices on a global scale. There is an opportunity to respond to the climate crisis by moving towards a circular built environment. Such a paradigm shift can be achieved by critically examining the possibility of reusing components from existing buildings. This study investigates approaches and tools needed to analyse the existing building stock and methods to enable component reuse. Ocular observations were conducted in Google Street View to analyse two building-specific characteristics: (1) façade material and (2) reusable components (window, doors, and shutters) found on building facades in two cities: Barcelona and Zurich. Not all products are equally suitable for reuse and require an evaluation metric to understand which components can be reused effectively. Consequently, tailored reuse strategies that are defined by a priority order of waste prevention are put forth. Machine learning shows promising potential to visually collect building-specific characteristics that are relevant for component reuse. The data collected is used to create classification maps that can help define protocols and for urban planning. This research can upscale limited information in countries where available data about the existing building stock is insufficient.

This article discusses robotic fabrication as a tool, beyond an innovative mode of production, to reinterpret the traditional methodology of craftsmanship, such as painting or stereotomy, offering new design potentials applied in architecture. A theoretical framework is developed, comprising an approach to the role of craft; the contemporary paradigm between making and digital tools; and the context of robotic fabrication in Architecture schools. This paper analyzes the methodology and content of a series of educational and research projects (2019-2021) in which robotic fabrication has been implemented through craftsmanship methodology. Finally, these are presented as case studies, illustrating the proposed framework, and help determine its applicability, impact and limitations in a border sense, to establish a more profound dialogue between digital and material design, and demonstrate a new exploratory way of tackling Design in Architecture education.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
