Este artículo examina el proceso de resignificación patrimonial que ocurrió en Guatemala a raíz de la Guerra Civil (1960-1996) y de la violencia perpetrada hacia las poblaciones indígenas y sus expresiones religiosas y espirituales. Se analizarán diferentes casos de activación patrimonial en torno a vestigios arqueológicos en la región de Tecpán y su utilización como altares ceremoniales durante y después del conflicto armado. Se pretende discutir la conversión del parque arqueológico de Iximche’ en espacio crucial para la visibilidad de la espiritualidad maya en la región antes de que esta ganara otros espacios y se convirtiera en un elemento de identidad para parte de la población kaqchikel local. Ello permitirá abordar el proceso de apropiación del patrimonio arqueológico por parte de la población local en la actualidad mediante la creación de narrativas contrahegemónicas y la conversión de determinados yacimientos en altares modernos.

Sin embargo, la información proveniente de fuentes de principios del siglo XX indica que las comunidades mayas solían otorgar significados religiosos y sociales a determinados yacimientos. Estas observaciones fueron desapareciendo de las publicaciones a raíz de la institucionalización de la arqueología y del desarrollo del turismo, especialmente en la región del actual estado de Quintana Roo. El objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar percepciones y usos en torno a determinados vestigios prehispánicos de este estado y cuestionarnos sobre su posible valor sagrado en la actualidad. La hipótesis de partida de este trabajo es que determinados montículos arqueológicos conocidos localmente como múulo'ob ocupan un lugar importante en la actual vida ritual maya.
