RÉSUMÉ
Les auteurs comparent l'impact de la densité ethnique de l'école, du taux de francisation associé à la langue maternelle et de l'ancienneté d'implantation sur l'aptitude au français d'élèves montréalais d'origine immigrée. L'analyse factorielle des données provenant de 896 élèves d'origine immigrée démontre que l'aptitude au français — qui comprend des attitudes positives à l'égard du français, l'utilisation du français avec l'entourage et la consommation de médias électroniques en français — est unidimensionnelle. Cette aptitude est modérément élevée chez les élèves d'origine immigrée, bien qu'inférieure à celle des élèves francophones d'implantation ancienne (N = 686). Par ailleurs, des analyses de régression multiple révèlent que la densité ethnique de l'école, qui n'est pas reliée à l'aptitude au français des élèves francophones d'implantation ancienne, est négativement reliée à celle des élèves d'origine immigrée. Toutefois, le taux de francisation associé à la langue maternelle est un prédicteur beaucoup plus important de l'aptitude au français des élèves d'origine immigrée que la densité ethnique de leur école. Enfin, il semble que ni le fait d'être né au Canada ni le fait d'avoir immigré en cours de scolarité n'aient d'impact sur le phénomène étudié.
