O presente artigo tem como objetivo explorar a bibliografia acerca do tema dos escândalos políticos, a partir da problemática dos possíveis impactos oriundos de sua cobertura midiática, positivos ou negativos, para os regimes democráticos. Tendo em vista o advento das democracias representativas modernas, cujo desenvolvimento se faz paralelo com o dos meios de comunicação de massa, se reconhece um estreitamento entre este regime político e esta forma de comunicação. Tal contato não só possibilitou o desenvolvimento de uma democracia de massas, como alterou a percepção sobre as democracias, tanto a nível da percepção empírica quanto de sua dimensão normativa. Dado o contexto, é necessário reconhecer o papel de predominância dos meios de comunicação de massa no funcionamento das democracias modernas, como um entrelaçamento no qual a mudança em um destes campos interfere no funcionamento do outro. Assim, ao reconhecermos a regularidade das coberturas de escândalos políticos nos noticiários, a pergunta imediata a se fazer passa a ser dos possíveis efeitos desse fato sobre a democracia. Para responder a esta pergunta foi empreendida uma breve análise bibliográfica da vasta literatura pertinente ao tema. As conclusões extraídas da análise dos textos selecionados foram a de uma cadeia complexa de produção de escândalos, cujos efeitos são usualmente negativos.
