Objetivo: conhecer a percepção de mulheres, que participam de grupos virtuais hospedados no Facebook, acerca do conteúdo veiculado por propagandas e campanhas, de 1921 até a atualidade, que envolvem a temática de aleitamento. Método: pesquisa de caráter exploratório e descritivo. Participaram 15 mulheres membros de dois grupos virtuais hospedados no Facebook. A coleta de dados sucedeu-se na plataforma, por meio de um formulário associado ao método de foto-elicitação. Posteriormente, empregou-se a análise de conteúdo. Resultados: As participantes identificaram que as propagandas do ramo alimentício, ao longo dos anos, contribuíram na construção da falsa crença de que o leite artificial é superior ao leite materno; o que necessitou posteriormente de campanhas de incentivo à amamentação. Considerações finais: As campanhas recentes apontam a importância tanto da rede de apoio quanto da garantia aos direitos da nutriz para que o aleitamento materno se estabeleça conforme o recomendado pela Organização Mundial da Saúde. Contudo, as campanhas construíram um romantismo em torno do aleitamento e da figura materna; fato que, culminou na sua responsabilização pelo sucesso da amamentação.
