An electrical tinnitus suppressor based on the use of an extracochlear stimulator has been developed at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, and was implanted in 2 male and 2 female patients. Tinnitus improved in all patients because the auditory nerve was able to be stimulated at home whenever patients wanted treatment. Additional benefits reported after electrical stimulation of the cochlea included sound sleep, relaxation in all cases, and improved hearing acuity in Cases 1, 2, and 4. Minimal temporary complications, including habituation and ear drum perforation, were observed.
It is difficult for the deatblind or the hearing impaired to control their voice pitch because they cannot perceive it. In particular, when singing it is very difficult for them to control their voice pitch because they must maintain a stable tone.In this research, a voice pitch control system is developed to assist their singing by means of a tactile display. The tactile musical note display has 64 piezoelectric vibrators arranged in four rows (16 x 4 rows). A user rests the last joint of an index finger on the tactile display to receive tactile stimuli. The user can then control voice pitch using tactile feedback. In this study, data on the voice pitch of two subjects were measured to calculate interval deviation that was different from voice pitch to a target musical interval. The average data for the interval deviation of both subjects used in this study was 117.5 [cent). The study result shows the deatblind users in this study can sing a song with as much accuracy as hearing children.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
