The damping characteristic and anodic polarization behavior in a 3 mass%NaCl solution were studied on Fe-Mo-Cr alloys containing Mo less than 16 mass% and less than 35 mass%Cr after various heat treatments. Measurement of the internal friction Q-' was carried out by the inverted torsion penusing an Instron-type testing machine and a potentiostat, respectively.In the case of furnace-cooling, the value of Q-1 is very high in Fe-Mo-Cr alloys with small amounts of molybdenum and chromium and is low in the alloys with large amounts of molybdenum and chromium. The low value of Q-1 in the latter is due to the fact that intermetallic compounds are precipitated in the ferromagnetic (Fe, Mo, Cr) solid solution. On the other hand, most of alloys subjected to water-quenching are fairly high in Q-1 because of the single phase (Fe, Mo, Cr) solid solution.The furnace-cooled alloys are generally low in Ep (pitting potential), while many of the alloys become considerably higher in Ep by water-quenching giving rise to a high Q-1 value.
