Polymerization of 1,4-(or 1,3-)divinylbenzene (DVB) in the presence of styrene initiated with lithium diisopropylamide was found to give soluble poly(DVB-co-styrene) having reactive vinyl group as pendant group of the polymer chain. The reactivity of 1 ,CDVB is higher than that of 1,3-DVB in the copolymerization reaction with styrene as comonomer. It was found also that 1 ,CDVB can be copolymerized with 2-vinylpyridine to form a soluble copolymer which consists primarily of 2-vinylpyridine units.
The large earthquake with Ms 7.7 struck central Taiwan on Sep. 21, 1999, and had ten times as much seismic energy as 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu Earthquake. Nantou and Taichung County near the epicenter were most badly hit by the earthquake, and in all Taiwan 2,321 people were killed and more than 52,000 buildings were collapsed or damaged till Oct. 11, 1999. We investigated the disaster area one month after the earthquake had occurred. This report outlines the result of the investigation, and especially describes the relationship between soil and the damage to city facilities, and between earthquake surface fault and the damage to civil engineering structures.
In Miyazaki Prefecture, slope failure disaster and flood disaster occurred due to the heavy rain accompanying the passage of typhoon 0514 early in September 2005, causing great damage. In the area of Mt. Wanitsuka (1,118m), which is about 20km southwest of Miyazaki City, the total rainfall from September 3rd to the 6th reached 1,013mm, resulting in large-scale slope failure particularly in the northern slope; debris flows occurred in the upstream area of the Kiyotake River, and a lot of earth and sand deposited in the lower stream of the river. There were two types of slope failure, collapse and landslides. In the upstream area of the Hiroto River in Kitago Town, large-scale slope failure occurred, which led to the formation of a natural dam.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
