Wstęp: Dane epidemiologiczne wskazują, że blisko 80% społeczeństwa cierpi z powodu dysfunkcji kręgosłupa i tkanek okołokręgosłupowych. Dolegliwości te są zatem istotnym problemem medyczno-społeczno-ekonomicznym.Celem pracy było przedstawienie przyczyn oraz sposobów leczenia zespołów bólowych kręgosłupa na podstawie wyników najnowszych badań.Materiały i metody: Przeszukano bazy danych EBSCOhost, PubMed Medline i Scopus.Wyniki: Ból kręgosłupa spowodowany może być anomaliami wrodzonymi, zmianami zwyrodnieniowymi, stanami zapalnymi, chorobami nowotworowymi, urazami, przeciążeniem, zaburzeniami metabolicznymi, problemami psychologicznymi lub socjalnymi. W leczeniu wykorzystuje się: teorie hamowania bólu, farmakoterapię oraz fizjoterapię.Wnioski: W ostatnich latach zdecydowanie wzrasta liczba publikacji dotycząca dolegliwości bólowych kręgosłupa. Pomimo rozwoju medycyny oraz znajomości zasad ergonomii liczba osób uskarżających się na omawiane schorzenia systematycznie rośnie. Konieczne jest podjęcie szerokich działań profilaktycznych, w których istotną rolę powinno odegrać uświadomienie społeczeństwa o zagrożeniach wynikających z niedbałości o własny kręgosłup. Celem powinno być ukształtowanie prozdrowotnych zachowań, wyrobienie poprawnych nawyków ruchowych w życiu codziennym, tj. wykonywanie systematycznych ćwiczeń i technik rozluźniających.
