Regional plans were prepared, adopted, or endorsed by regional governments or a collection of local governments in the United States. Comprehensive plans included those that addressed a variety of interconnected social, environmental, and economic topics. Development plans included those that set guidance for development and use of land as well as economic development. Sustainability plans included those that expanded on comprehensive plans with a focus on air and water quality, active living, climate change, environmental exposures, and public safety. Last, transportation plans included those that provided long-term guidance related to transportation needs and goals of the region.
The growth of health disparities in the United States, particularly those associated with dietrelated diseases, has motivated a reconvergence of the public health and planning disciplines to address this shared challenge. However, the dynamics and mechanisms through which public health and planning agencies can systematically address food-related issues have yet to be fully understood. This study analyzes how partnership between public health professionals and planners in local, regional, and metropolitan (LRM) governments can strengthen community food systems through a more integrated and holistic approach to health.
