This paper identifies some of the pedagogical benefits of an active learning course delivery complemented by an online discussion forum to teach sustainability by evaluating the case of a geography master's course. The potential benefits and some challenges of an active learning course delivery to teach sustainability in geography and related disciplines are considered. This case study further supports past research that suggests e-learning as a complement to the classroom (1) increases the opportunities for student participation; and (2) enhances the participation of students who may feel more inhibited to engage in discussions in a traditional classroom setting.
The Central and Southern Florida Project for Flood Control and Other Purposes (1948) authorized the building of water management infrastructure in the South Florida region, which extends from Orlando to Florida Bay (47 000 km 2 ), to drain large portions of the Everglades wetland mosaic for flood control in coastal urban areas and to create the Everglades Agricultural Area south of Lake Okeechobee (McCally, 1999). By the late 1960s the negative effects on the remaining natural areas, including the Everglades National Park, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Ramsar Convention Wetland of International Importance, were clear. The rapid rate of population growth in South Florida also meant increased demands for urban water supply. From 1968 a series of incremental measures were attempted to enhance urban water supply and improve flows to the Everglades National Park, but these were largely unsuccessful (Light and Dineen, 1994). Through the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA) of 1992, US Congress authorized the US Army Corps of Engineers (COE) to undertake investigations into the potential for modifying the Central and South Florida Project,``with particular reference to improving the quality of the environment'' [Section 309(1)].The discursive predominance of the`restoration' of the Everglades in media coverage often obscured the fact that the WRDA of 1992 also included provision for`i mproving ... urban water supplies affected by the project'' [Section 309(1)]. The WRDA of 1992 signaled the incipience of a planning process, the Comprehensive Review Study, or Restudy (of the Central and South Florida Project), which engagedFinding the political`sweet spot': sectional interests, consensus power, and the Everglades Restudy (1992^2000)
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
