La télévision est-elle nocive ? Ses programmes sont-ils la cause de certains comportements déviants chez les jeunes ? La culture éclatée qu'elle propose est-elle un obstacle à la structuration des connaissances ? Ces questions et quelques autres alimentent un débat quasi permanent, au mieux périodique, et qui, amalgamant souvent message et médium, occupe les colonnes des journaux, anime les discussions familiales et alimente la désespérance des enseignants. Pourtant, toute cette agitation oublie généralement l'aspect sociologique du « phénomène télévision ». Il est permis de penser qu'au delà des contenus des programmes, et des valeurs qu'ils diffusent ou inculquent, c'est davantage « l'effet télévision », phénomène culturel de classe, qui se cumule aux autres sources d'inégalité scolaire, pour renforcer un processus socialement inégalitaire.
