En immunofluorescence, diverses structures de la rétine de truite, de poulet, de mouton, de porc et d’homme (rétine associée à un rétinoblastome) réagissent positivement en présence d'antisérums préparés contre des neuropeptides et des protéines structurales bien définies. Nous avons ainsi observé les péricaryons des cellules horizontales du mouton positifs avec une anti β (1-24)-ACTH, ceux des cellules horizontales de la truite positifs avec un anti β-endorphine, certains photorécepteurs de la rétine du poulet positifs avec l'anti β-MSH, les fibres rétiniennes internes du porc et du mouton positives avec l’anti β-LPH et l’anti α-MSH ; un petit nombre de cellules amacrines de poulet sont somatostatine + ; sur la rétine humaine associée à un rétinoblastome, des péricaryons des cellules photoréceptrices apparaissent β-LPH + et met-enképhaline + et un contingent important de fibres rétiniennes, de neurones bipolaires et multipolaires apparaissent intensément β-MSH + . Dans la rétine du rat, les péricaryons de la couche nucléaire externe réagissent intensément avec l'anti-mélatonine. Des structures rétiniennes non neuronales présentent une immunoréactivité positive pour l’anti-α-MSH (épithélium pigmentaire de la choroïde de poulet, cellules de Müller de la truite), l'anti α-endorphine (cellules de Müller du porc, du mouton, de l'homme), l’antimet-enképhaline (cellules de Müller du porc, du poulet, «peigne» du poulet). Les nerfs ciliaires myélinisés du poulet et de l’homme sont apparus α-MSH +. L’immunoréactivité pour l’antitubuline, localisée aux axones, et pour l’anti-SBP, localisée à la gaine de myéline, est apparue indépendante de l’espèce animale considérée.
