Aim. This article presents the status of the Greek Catholic Church during a defined period. It brings the functioning of this religion in the period of normalisation of society closer. Methods. Our study is the result of archival and document-based research, as well as expert studies and monographs dealing with the above-mentioned issue. Results. Although we can define the period studied in our research as a period of relative freedom when compared with the years 1950–1967, it cannot be perceived as a total liberation of the Church. Unfortunately, the political reality was also reflected in the life and functioning of the Church itself. The Greek Catholic Church and its leaders understood that without the necessary support from the state and regime, they would lose their freedom mainly attained in the first half of 1968. Conclusion. The Greek Catholic Church had to face several important and ground-breaking tasks that were to ensure its stability for functioning and administration after 18 years of its non-existence. This involved receiving state consent for Consecrator ThDr. Basil (Vasiľ) Hopko, leadership of the Greek Catholic Church in general, consolidation of relationships and conflict resolution between the Greek Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church, or even the area of support and consent for building its own institute of theological formation.
This year marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of the infamous Catholic priest, the ardent servant of the communist regime and politician Fr. Josef Plojhar. This study intends to address the hitherto neglected side of this figure, namely his literary work, which is very rich. Shortly after his ordination in 1927, he published a high-quality treatise on stigmatised Therese Neumann of Konnersreuth. In 1930, at his own expense, he published a small pamphlet in German for the International Eucharistic Congress in Carthage he participated in. However, most of his works were from the post-war period when he was already completely committed to communist ideology. We will focus our attention on his work: Two Years with People: Speeches and Articles from 1948 – 1949. The aim of this type of Plojhar’s publishing activity was to prove that Communists were not the main enemies of the faith and Christian religion, but that Christian views on neighbourly love and Christian solidarity were exactly the same as the Commu-nists’ efforts to achieve a world without exploiters and the bourgeoisie.
The study, based on archival sources, printed materials and professional literature, presents one of the chapters in the history of leisure activities in the environment of a priestly seminary -alumnat/seminarium in České Budějovice. The theologians of the seminary in České Budějovice did not spend all their time only studying the theological and philosophical sciences or praying in the chapel. In the schedule of the day, they also had time for so-called recreation. How did they fulfil it? We can divide these activities into several areas, physical activities -today we would say sports activities, hobby activities, passive and active cultural activities, which consisted mainly of organising various academies, theater performances, singing performances, etc. Their leisure time activities included also individual reading or conversation. As this study documents with concrete examples, these leisure activities reflected the spirit of the time and the specifics of the life of future priests in the alumnat/seminarium more than a hundred years ago.
