In Arctic macroalgal belt ecosystems, macrozoobenthic production is thought to be an important link between primary production and higher trophic levels. Macrozoobenthic biomass and secondary production were studied along transects (2.5-15 m depth) in the macroalgal belt at Hansneset in Kongsfjorden, Svalbard, from 2012 to 2013. At 2.5 m, the standing stock reached its maxima of 174.8 ± 54.4 g ash-free dry weight per 1 m 2 , while density (4341 ind. m -2 ± 1127 95 % CI) and production (7.0 g C m -2 y -1 ± 2.8 95 % CI) were highest at 5 m water depth in 2012/13. Compared to a study from 1996/98, this re-sampling indicated a drastic change in the depth distribution of macrozoobenthic biomass and secondary production at Hansneset. While both biomass and secondary production increased with water depth in 1996/98, this pattern was inversed in 2012/13 owing to a tenfold increase in biomass and secondary production in the upper most sublittoral (2.5-5 m). Variability of macrozoobenthic biomass and secondary production corresponded to differences in the physical environment and macroalgal vegetation along the depth gradient. In the last decade, the number of ice-free days per year increased probably due to Arctic warming. As a result, shallow rocky habitats (2.5-5 m) are less affected by ice scouring, thereby opening new space for colonisation by benthic fauna. However, faunal secondary production was low compared to macroalgal primary production, indicating a considerable export of most of the algal production from the shallow habitats to the adjacent areas.
The potency of newly developed asymmetric bispyridinium oximes (K027, K048) in reactivating tabun-inhibited acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and in eliminating tabun-induced acute toxic effects was compared with commonly used oximes (obidoxime, trimedoxime, the oxime HI-6) using in vivo methods. Studies determined the percent of reactivation of tabun-inhibited blood and tissue AChE in poisoned rats and showed that the reactivating efficacy of both newly developed oximes is comparable with obidoxime and trimedoxime, the most efficacious known reactivators of tabun-inhibited AChE. These were also found to be sufficiently efficacious in the elimination of acute lethal toxic effects in tabun-poisoned rats. The oxime HI-6, relatively efficacious against soman, did not seem to be an adequately effective oxime in reactivation of tabun-inhibited AChE and in counteracting acute lethal effects of tabun. In addition, our results confirm that the efficacy of oximes in reactivating tabun-inhibited AChE in blood, diaphragm, and brain correlates with the potency of oximes in protecting rats poisoned with supralethal doses of tabun.
Arctic kelp belts, made of large perennial macroalgae of the order Laminariales, are expanding because of rising temperatures and reduced sea ice cover of coastal waters. In summer 2013, the trophic relationships within a kelp belt food web in Kongsfjorden (Spitsbergen) were determined using fatty acid and stable isotope analyses. Low relative proportions of Phaeophyta fatty acid trophic markers (i.e. 20:4(n-6), 18:3(n-3) and 18:2(n-6)) in consumers (3.3−8.9%), as well as low 20:4(n-6)/20:5(n-3) ratios (< 0.1−0.6), indicated that Phaeophyta were poorly used by macrozoobenthos as a food source, either fresh or as detritus. Relatively high δ 13 C values measured in macrozoobenthos (−22.5 to −16.1 ‰) ruled out an important role of erect Rhodophyta, which were much more 13 C depleted (−37.1 to −35.8 ‰). Instead, δ 13 C values and relatively high abundances of typical diatom (14:0, 16:1(n-7), 20:5(n-3)) and flagellate (18:4(n-3), 22:6(n-3)) fatty acid trophic markers in consumers pointed out an important use of microalgae, likely of pelagic and benthic origin (i.e. senescent phytoplankton bloom, eroded epiphytes and suspended epilithic material). The use of these food resources may be fostered by their trapping under the kelp canopy.
Four novel bisquaternary aldoxime cholinesterase reactivators differing in their chemical structure were prepared. Afterwards, their biological activity was evaluated for their ability to reactivate acetylcholinesterase (AChE; EC 3.1.1.7) and butyryl-cholinesterase (BuChE; EC 3.1.1.8) inhibited by paraoxon. Their reactivation activity was compared with standard reactivators—pralidoxime, obidoxime and HI-6—which are clinically used at present. As it resulted, none of the prepared compounds surpassed obidoxime, which is considered to be the most potent compound if used for reactivation of AChE inhibited by paraoxon. In case of BuChE reactivation, two compounds (K053 and K068) achieved similar results as obidoxime.
Baltic coastal lagoons are severely threatened by eutrophication. To evaluate the impact of eutrophication on macrophytobenthos, we compared the seasonal development in macrophytobenthic composition, biomass and production, water column parameters (light, nutrients), phytoplankton biomass and production in one mesotrophic and one eutrophic German coastal lagoon. We hypothesized that light availability is the main driver for primary production, and that net primary production is lower at a higher eutrophication level. In the mesotrophic lagoon, macrophytobenthic biomass was much higher with distinct seasonal succession in species composition. Filamentous algae dominated in spring and late summer and probably caused reduced macrophytobenthic biomass and growth during early summer, thus decreasing vegetation stability. Light attenuation was far higher in the eutrophic lagoon, due to high phytoplankton densities, explaining the low macrophytobenthic biomass and species diversity in every season. Areal net primary production was far lower in the eutrophic lagoon. The “paradox of enrichment” hypothesis predicts lower production at higher trophic levels with increased nutrient concentrations. Our results prove for the first time that this hypothesis may be valid already at the primary producer level in coastal lagoons.
The compensated networks are affected by the phase capacity asymmetry of wiring, which causes the unbalancing of the phase voltages in the tuned condition of the arc-suppression coil. In the especially unfavourable cases this effect reduces the possibility of network operation with the tuned arc-suppression coil. The operation with the arc-suppression coil out of tune is accompanied by higher values of the fault currents during the ground faults and the natural frequency of the course of recovery voltage in the network after switching off or interrupting the ground fault. These disadvantages can only be removed by efficient elimination of the phase asymmetry. The new methods of eliminating the phase capacity asymmetry allow for controlling the phase asymmetry size (its reduction as well as its possible increase), they keep it within a specified tolerance band (Uo value in the tuned condition of the arc-suppression coil is typically maintained at levels from 1% to 4% of the network voltage phase value). The new methods of elimination of the phase capacity asymmetry have favourable effects on the network operation during the ground fault and do not reduce the protecting elements sensitivity to high-ohm ground faults. By improving the accuracy of the arc-suppression coil tuning the safety of the compensated networks operation can be enhanced. The other properties of the whole system of phase capacity asymmetry elimination designed to increase the compensated networks operation safety, to improve the reliability of groundfault protections and to locate the fault areas, can be fully utilized
Preparation of 1-(4-hydroxy-iminomethylpyridinium)-3-pyridiniumpropane dibromide is described. This compound represents a new acetylcholinesterase (AChE) reactivator, which has no substituents on the second pyridinium ring as found in other commonly used AChE reactivators. The reactivation ability of this reactivator was tested on tabun-and cyclosarin-inhibited AChE. According to the results obtained, the new compound (without substitution and with decreased molecule size) showed increased reactivation potency in case of cyclosarin inhibited AChE. A potent oxime for treatment of tabun and cyclosarin-caused intoxications was thus obtained via slight modification of the reactivator structure (compared to trimedoxime and K027).
