Se estudió la producción de biomasa en gónádas, tejido somático, materia orgánica de la concha y biso en individuos de una población explotada del mejillón Perna perna en Guatapanare, Estado Sucre, Venezuela, en muestras mensuales recolectadas desde septiembre de 1988 hasta septiembre de 1989. La variación mensual de cada componente se evaluó utilizando ecuaciones de regresión y un modelo de crecimiento en la misma población. La especie es de crecimiento rápido alcanzando 87.84 mm a los 12 meses. La producción de tejido somático fue máxima a los 10 meses de edad mientras que la producción de materia orgánica y biso alcanzaron sus máximos a los ocho meses, disminuyendo luego. La producción de gónadas evaluada por la pérdida de peso en los dos principales desoves (OCtubre - noviembre de 1988 y abril - junio de 1989) aumenta con la edad desde un valor de 0.4 gimes a los cuatro meses hasta 0.25 a los 14 meses de edad. La relación PI B disminuye con la edad mientras que el esfuerzo reproductivo (PgIP x 100) aumenta desde 14.81 % a los cuatro meses hasta 42.37 a los 14 meses de edad, revelando la existencia de una, estrategia de supervivencia poblacional con individuos de reducida longevidad y un alto potencial reproductivo desde muy joven que garantizan la viabilidad de la población.
