Objetivo: Avaliar quantitativamente a presença de enteroparasitas humanos em alfaces (Lactuca sativa) comercializados no município de Patos no estado da Paraíba. Métodos: Para a realização da pesquisa, foram selecionadas e analisadas aleatoriamente 50 amostras de alfaces frescas. Destas, 25 foram obtidas nas feiras livres e 25 nos supermercados locais em diferentes regiões da cidade paraibana. O material foi encaminhado ao Laboratório de Microscopia da Universidade Federal de Campina Grande para o processamento e a análise. As alfaces (L. sativa) foram homogeneizadas com água destilada e submetidas à sedimentação por 24 horas. O sedimento foi examinado sob microscopia de luz. Resultados: Das 50 amostras processadas, 36 delas (72%) continham parasitas intestinais. Destas, foram encontradas contaminações, tanto nas amostras obtidas em feiras livres, como nas obtidas em supermercados, como cistos de Entamoeba coli, Giardia lamblia, Endolimax nana, Iodamoeba butschilli e larvas de nematelmintos. Ocorreram prevalência dos cistos de Entamoeba coli (39%) e larvas de nematelmintos (23%). A presença de protozoários foi significativamente maior em comparação aos helmintos. Conclusão: É alto o índice de contaminação das hortaliças estudadas independentemente do local da coleta e, com isso, torna-se necessária a realização de campanhas de saúde pública, na cidade de Patos, para estimular melhoras higiênicas na produção e na comercialização da alface, como também incentivar a higienização correta das alfaces antes do consumo.
Introdução: A cárie dentária é a doença crônica mais prevalente na infância, sendo um problema significativo de saúde pública. A saliva é considerada um dos fatores hospedeiros mais importantes e um modulador biológico essencial que controla a velocidade e progressão da cárie. Objetivo: Realizar uma revisão da literatura sobre cárie na primeira infância (CPI) e sua possível relação com proteínas e peptídeos salivares. Métodos: Uma busca eletrônica foi realizada nas bases de dados Scopus, SciELO e PubMed Medline, aplicando a combinação dos termos "cárie na primeira infância", "saliva", "peptídeos" e "proteínas". Foram incluídos nesta pesquisa estudos que visam relacionar proteínas e peptídeos salivares e cárie dentária, indivíduos com idade entre 0-71 meses, estudos publicados na língua inglesa, ensaios randomizados e ensaios clínicos que demonstram a relação entre cárie na primeira infância e proteínas salivares. Estudos realizados com pacientes com síndromes congênitas e/ou cromossômicas, distúrbios sistêmicos ou deficiências motoras, bem como estudos em animais, estudos de revisão, cartas ao editor ou relatos de caso não foram incluídos nesta revisão. Resultados: Dos 48 estudos identificados, 13 foram selecionados para esta revisão. A maioria dos estudos mostrou associação entre proteínas e peptídeos salivares e a presença ou ausência de cárie. Seis estudos mostraram um alto nível de qualidade, enquanto o restante dos estudos foi classificado como de qualidade moderada. Conclusão: Embora a associação entre proteínas salivares e CPI seja estabelecida, mais evidências são necessárias para que os biomarcadores salivares sejam considerados preditores de risco de CPI.
