RESUMEN: El desarrollo sostenible y su influencia en la práctica turística dependen en gran medida de las decisiones del turista y su comportamiento, el cual se puede incentivar a través de herramientas de marketing. Este artículo tiene el propósito de profundizar en la conceptualización de algunas aproximaciones y vertientes del marketing que persiguen objetivos de corte social y ambiental, cuya comparación y reflexión han sido poco estudiadas, para reflexionar sobre el potencial del marketing con causa en la promoción de comportamientos sostenibles en los turistas, en lo referente a visitar áreas naturales protegidas como destinos turísticos. Se propone un marco de referencia que comprende: 1) el turismo sostenible visto como un comportamiento sostenible, 2) las áreas naturales protegidas y su potencial turístico sostenible y 3) las diferentes aproximaciones del marketing que tienen objetivos de corte social y ambiental, y la conceptualización del marketing con causa. En este trabajo se discute la manera en la que se han estudiado estos tres puntos, se identifican las deficiencias encontradas hasta el momento, y se establecen posibles líneas para investigaciones futuras.
