Esta pesquisa teve como objetivo verificar a possibilidade de trabalhar a Modelagem Matemática junto aos alunos-detentos do Sistema Penitenciário do Paraná, Brasil, na cidade de Curitiba e região metropolitana. Propusemos uma investigação sustentada em pressupostos da pesquisa qualitativa numa perspectiva da pesquisa-ação. A pesquisa foi realizada com seis alunos-detentos matriculados no Centro Estadual de Educação Básica Para Jovens e Adultos (CEEBJA) Dr. Mário Faraco, sendo este um estabelecimento de Ensino de Jovens e Adultos (EJA) que atua dentro de todas as unidades penais de Curitiba e região metropolitana, e atende alunos-detentos, no que se refere à educação formal, do Departamento Penitenciário do Paraná. A utilização da Modelagem Matemática possibilitou aos alunos levantar dados e informações, formular, resolver e decidir questões de interesse, como também proporcionou o desenvolvimento da criatividade, do senso crítico, da elevação da autoestima, da intuição e da curiosidade, importantes no processo de ressocialização. As discussões geradas e o contato com dados e informações contribuíram para que os alunos compreendessem a necessidade do aprendizado escolar na sua realidade social e no seu cotidiano, visualizando a Matemática como um instrumento de análise e interpretação desta realidade. Dados desta pesquisa revelam que é possível, dentro de determinadas condições, trabalhar com a Modelagem Matemática junto aos alunos-detentos.
