Background: The aim of the study was to determine whether free-living birds belonging to game species whose meat is used for human consumption can constitute a reservoir of pathogenic Campylobacter strains, spreading these bacteria to other hosts or directly contributing to human infection. Methods: A total of 91 cloacal swabs were taken from different species of wildlife waterfowl to estimate the Campylobacter prevalence, the genetic diversity of the isolates, and the presence of virulence genes and to evaluate the antimicrobial resistance. Results: The presence of Campylobacter spp. was confirmed in 32.9% of samples. Based on flaA-SVR sequencing, a total of 19 different alleles among the tested Campylobacter isolates were revealed. The virulence genes involved in adhesion were detected at high frequencies among Campylobacter isolates regardless of the host species. The highest resistance was observed for ciprofloxacin. The resistance rates to erythromycin and tetracycline were observed at the same level. Conclusions: These results suggest that wildlife waterfowl belonging to game species may constitute a reservoir of Campylobacter, spreading these bacteria to other hosts or directly contributing to human disease. The high distribution of virulence-associated genes among wildlife waterfowl Campylobacter isolates make them potentially able to induce infection in humans.

Toxoplasmosis is a cosmopolitan zoonotic disease caused by Toxoplasma gondii, an intracellular protozoan. The main source of infection for humans is meat contaminated with tissue cysts, the main invasive form of the parasite. The muscle tissue of seropositive animals of the family Suidae, subfamily Sus (domestic pig, wild boar) are the most common sources of infections with Toxoplasma gondii. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of T. gondii infections in the meat of wild boars (Sus scrofa) based on measurements of T. gondii antibodies in the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). One hundred samples of muscle tissue were obtained from wild boars hunted in the Game Breeding Center in north-eastern Poland. The animals were divided into three age groups: weaners (27), subadults (38) and adults (35). The prevalence of toxoplasmosis was very high in the analyzed population, and 71% of the animals were classified as seropositive in ELISA. Antibodies against T. gondii were detected in 62.9% of weaners, 73.6% of subadults and 74.2% of adult boars. The seroprevalence of T. gondii antibodies was significantly higher in the animals hunted in the Game Breeding Center in comparison with the national average determined by other authors. Such extensive spread of the parasite in the natural environment can be attributed to geographic location, landform, presence of waterbodies, local climate, the size of the wild boar population and the spread of castor bean ticks (Ixodes ricinus).

Wide distribution of ecto- and endoparasites in cattle is a serious problem in the sustainability of a farm, due to the negative impact on animals’ health and productivity. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of antibodies against Ostertagia and Hypoderma in udder milk samples and the comparison of milk yield and content of the basic components of milk in ELISA-positive and ELISA-negative cows. Milk samples were collected from 148 lactating cows from 3 herds. Antibody detection was performed using specific ELISAs for Ostertagia ostertagi and Hypoderma bovis. Milk yield and content of protein, fat, and dry matter were studied in samples from each individual cow 11 times per year at 4 week intervals. The extensiveness of dual parasitic invasions in individual herds, estimated on the basis of udder milk testing with the ELISA test, varied and amounted to 3.22%, 11.36%, and 4.76% in the three studied herds, respectively. No antibodies were found in 61.2%, 22.7%, and 57.1% of the milk samples from the cows in each herd. The milk yield of ELISA-positive cows was significantly lower in comparison to the efficiency of ELISA-negative cows and amounted to 294 kg and even to 3672 kg of milk per year, per cow. No significant differences were found between the fat and protein contents of milk between ELISA-positive and -negative cows for both parasites.

Purpose of research: The aim of the study was to determine the presence of Listeria spp. strains in the milk samples obtained from dairy farms in north-eastern Poland and to determine the profile of resistance to antibiotics recommended in the treatment of listeriosis. Material and methods: 500 samples of bulk milk were analyzed. Milk samples were obtained from dairy farms located in Warmia and Mazury region in Poland. Chronic mastitis, requiring frequent and long-term use of antibiotics has been documented in these herds. Isolation of Listeria spp. was performed according to the standard procedure PN-EN ISO 11290-1: 2017-07. Antibiotic resistance testing was performed by the disc diffusion method according to the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) recommendations. Results: In total, out of 500 samples of pooled milk, based on biochemical properties, 8 isolates were confirmed as belonging to the genus Listeria (1.6%). The further identification of Listeria strains on the basis of MicrobactListeria12L showed that 3 strains (3/8, 37.5%) belonged to L. monocytogenes species and 5 strains (5/8, 62.5%) belonged to L. innocua species. The analysis of sensitivity to commonly used antimicrobial agents showed that all isolates, both belonging to L. monocytogenes and L. innocua species, were sensitive to ampicillin. Multidrug resistance, defined as resistance to at least three classes of antibiotics, was confirmed among four isolates (50%). Research summary: The studies undertaken revealed that raw milk can pose a risk for public health due to the prevalence of pathogenic Listeria spp. among which multidrug resistant strains are present. It is therefore necessary to rationalize the use of antibiotics and to monitor bacterial resistance in the food production environment.
