Devido à crescente exploração da água subterrânea para diversos fins, o uso dos Índices de Qualidade da Água (IQA) como instrumentos complementares na avaliação da qualidade e caracterização das fontes hídricas tem se mostrado satisfatório, tornando-se uma ferramenta bastante útil para facilitar a comunicação entre profissionais e a compreensão da população interessada no assunto. Tendo isso em vista, o trabalho tem como objetivo a caracterização do sistema de abastecimento de água público e a avaliação da qualidade da água subterrânea utilizada para o abastecimento do município de Abaetetuba - PA. Foram aplicados três Índices de Qualidade, no caso o Índice de Qualidade Natural de Águas Subterrâneas (IQNAS), o Índice de Qualidade da Água Subterrânea (IQAS) e o Índice Relativo de Qualidade (IRQ). Com os resultados dos parâmetros de qualidade de água e profundidades dos poços, fornecidos pela companhia responsável pelo abastecimento no município, foi possível calcular os índices de todos os poços da região de estudo. Destacaram-se os poços do bairro algodoal e da ETA, que obtiveram resultados ligeiramente inferior (“boa”) para o IQNAS, sendo que na água do poço da ETA, o conceito também foi ligeiramente inferior (“aceitável”) para o IQAS e consideravelmente inferior (“péssima”) para o IRQ, possivelmente pela elevada concentração de nitrato (14 mg.L-1) na água do poço da ETA. Contudo, em sua maioria, os poços usados na captação apresentam água com qualidade satisfatória.
