Pour ce travail, Posse se sert de matériaux divers comme des versions d'origine orale, des matériaux non littéraires (des lettres, des manuscrits anciens), d'une multiplicité de points de vue, d'une double conception du temps et d'un espace multiple pour organiser l'univers narratif de ces deux romans. Finalement, l'utilisation fréquente de notes et de parenthèses montre bien la manipulation lettrée que fait le narrateur de ces matériaux historiques et imaginaires.
