Operador Multiplicativo. Ensino Fundamental. Aprendizagem e Ensino.AbstractThis article aims to discuss the performance of students from the final years of Elementary School in a problem involving fraction with the meaning of multiplication operator. For this, we seek support on ideas by Moutinho (2005), Magina and Campos (2008), Monteiro and Groenwald (2014). Data were collected through application of a questionnaire to 565 students from 5th to 9th year of Elementary School from four municipal public schools of the State of Sergipe, and their teachers. Results show that student performance on the question related to the applied instrument, involving the meaning of fraction as an operator, was low, with right answers not reaching 40% of the cases, without improvement from year to year. That happened even with teachers stating that they do use similar questions when teaching. Yet, students present difficulties to identify fractions when integers are represented in a discrete context, and they see fractions as a set of two integers separated by a trace, leading to students’ operating with them by adding or subtracting. Keywords: Fraction. This article presents part of the discussions and results of a doctoral research project that analyzed issues related to the initial education of future math teachers, concerning the selection, organization, and preparation of situations that promote students’ academic learning of fundamental ideas related to justifications and proofs. This study involves a group of ten pre-service teachers who attend the Federal University of Sergipe. The first phase of data collection involved the application of diagnostic instruments. The second phase, named the ‘training process’, was carried out following principles of the Design Experiments methodology and aimed to investigate how activity sequences exploring knowledge about proofs, from a didactic and curricular perspective, foster new meanings for learning concepts and attitudes. To consider theoretically the knowledge that a mathematics teacher should possess, we considered the categories by Ball, Thames and Phelps. The answers by future teachers to the diagnostic instruments revealed a certain cautiousness regarding the inclusion of proofs in school curricula. Discussions and reflections on learning situations, proposed during this phase, broadened the knowledge base necessary for mathematics teachers and gave new meaning to working with proofs.
Abstract The goal of this paper is to present a discussion on knowledge related to fractions and how to teach them. The discussion on teaching fractions is based on the ideas of Magina and Campos and on Morales, among others; and on Shulman regarding the knowledge necessary for teaching. The data were collected from two questionnaires with five situations involving the different fraction concepts, one applied to students in Basic Education and the other applied to interns in the Mathematics Teaching Degree Program. The results indicate that while the student-teachers know how to correctly respond to situations involving the different meanings of fractions, the teaching strategies they proposed make it clear that when they have to think about how to explain the subject, they usually appeal to the part-whole meaning of fractions, thus demonstrating insufficient pedagogical knowledge for teaching fractions. Moreover, they believe that using auxiliary material resources can contribute to learning this knowledge. Keywords: Teaching Strategies. Fractions. Teacher Training.
