La imagen del más allá tuvo como factor común para muchas poblaciones del I milenio a. C. asentadas en tornoal Mediterráneo un monstruo devorador que engullía a aquellos difuntos que no habían seguido correctamente los preceptos religiosos de su comunidad. A pesar de las diferencias regionales, esta criatura guarda características similares fácilmente rastreables en la literatura y la iconografía de dicho período. Se trata siempre de un ser híbrido, mezcla de algunos de los más temidos animales conocidos en cada región,representadocon las fauces abiertas, los colmillos visibles y la lengua fuera, que habita en el inframundo y engulle con apetito voraz diversas manifestaciones del «alma» de los fallecidos, en especial su sombra. Tras analizar esta figura en diversas áreas que circundan el Mediterráneo, se plantea su existencia en la escultura protohistórica del sur de la península ibérica. En concreto, en el relieve del banquete de Pozo Moro, el «oso/leona» de Porcuna y la «loba» del Cerro de los Molinillos.
