Issues of anticipation, separation, and reunion are concerns that families face when family members are subject to military deployment. In this article, the authors look at these issues and provide a depiction of what the families, the military, and family counselors can do to alleviate some of the related strain on family functioning.
The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between perceived parenting styles and urban adolescents' learning and studying strategies. The results revealed that those adolescents who perceived their parents as being authoritative tended to engage in more effective learning and study strategies. Implications are discussed for counselors and teachers using this information as a fostering tool in their work with urban adolescents.The family is generally considered an important system that has a heavy impact on the development of children and adolescents. Working with families through a systemic model requires the therapist to reach out to allied professionals who may have a vested interest in and may be able to make a valuable contribution to the assessment and treatment plan for a given family. As perhaps the second most influential setting on the child’s development, the school and its professional staff can serve as an invaluable resource to the family therapist. A collaborative approach to family therapy is presented in this article.
